"The Boathouse's Summer Concert Series"

Tru Sol played this past Sunday June 8 to a packed backyard. The reggae/soul/funk group showed off their groovy bass lines and head nodding rhythms as they played classics from Motown and new age pop hits. During Tru Sol’s rendition of “Umbrella” by Rhiana, they tossed umbrellas to the group of 10 dancers.

Casual is not only a fashion style, it seems to be the mindset of the backyard concerts. Most obliged to the laid-backyard fashion of the event – it’s not hard when the scenery is a beautiful intercoastal river, the weather is warm and the sun is shining.

Coming by sea and road, most sported board shorts and sandals, the girls in nothing more than bikinis. The boaters dropped anchor in the bordering Intercoastal Waterway and made their way up The Boathouse’s dock stairs. Better yet, man’s best friends were more than welcome. Many concert goers brought their four-legged pals to sniff around the grassy backyard.

Tru Sol began to play at four and by the time the sun began to set below the nearby and vacant Waccamaw Pottery, showed no signs of stopping. Some onlookers chose to lay beach towels or blankets on the grass while others brought fold away chairs. The Boathouse provides chairs, but it was those chairs that were the first to be snatched up.

Now that you know the history, meet the people represented by the name, "Tru Sol."

The lady of Tru Sol, Sheryta Spears, has been gracing stages all over the Grand Strand since the mid 90's as a member of the acappella group, Cymp'l Touch. She was born in Latta, SC where her sultry voice took flight. Audiences can see and feel her passion from the first note to the last. Music from the soul is definitely a driving force in her life.

The founder of Tru Sol is guitarist, Dorian Samuel, (bottom middle on pic) born in Jersey City, NJ. Dorian is a veteran performer and has performed in the acapella group, Dejour. He initially start playing the bass at a young age. His love for melody and rhythm inspired him start practicing on the acoustic guitar. His devotion to the band displays that his overall passion for soul music is indeed true.

Born in Kingstree, SC, Merrell Samuel, a bassist since the age of 14, spent most of his life playing the smoothest instrument and therefore carrying the groove. His distinct musical style and melodic vocals leave people wondering, “how did he do that?” Being the youngest member of Tru Sol in no way means he's lacking in the soul department.
