"Midway Driller Review"

Bobby was boffo.  (Webster defines "boffo" as "extremely successful and sensational)
That was the overwhelming consensus at the Nile Nightclub in Bakersfield when Bobby Banuelos brought his comedic talent back to Kern County.
Banuelos is a 1992 Taft High graduate who also attended Taft College and got his start as an actor by performing at the Bakersfield Melodrama.

He channeled his energy into stand up, appearing in comedy clubs in Los Angeles and Aspen, Colo.  That led to commercials and regular gigs aboard cruise ships.
Banuelos’ local roots drew an eager group of Taftians to the stage at the Nile where he kept the audience laughing for an hour with his take on the simplicities and complexities of being a man, coping with the opposite sex, stalkers and superheroes.
His signature is his original music with songs like “I’m Your Stalker” about an ex-girlfriend.
He also offered his version of Carrie Underwood’s “Right Now” about cheating on a girlfriend.

“Next time I cheat it won’t be with your sister.  Because you’re crazy is the reason that I cheat.”
He dons a Batman mask for a tribute to the difficulty superheroes encounter trying to fit in.
“I try to be a regular guy, but you know why I can’t.  I’m freakin’ Batman!”
Banuelos goes back to his childhood with his MC B-O-B rap about a 12-year-old luring a girl over while his parents are away.
“I got a 10-speed bike with a basket on the front.  Come on over tonight.  My folks will be out until 11, and I’ll make you feel so right.”
The guy’s got a good singing voice and makes effective use of his guitar, but what makes it all work is the way he weaves the prose.
He also engages individual audience members, effectively infusing them into his act.
Banuelos closed the show with his version of  “My Way,” which had the audience waving lighters and candles from the nightclub’s tables.
He admitted performing before family and friends brought with it more butterflies.
“I was way more nervous tonight than I ever was doing comedy clubs in Hollywood,” he said.
A warm reception and, more importantly, his talent calmed the nerves.
Doing stand up is challenging – maybe the toughest job in show business.
Bobby Banuelos does it superbly well.
He got a standing O.  It was richly deserved. - by Dennis McCall
