"The Name is Coriz"

THE NAME IS CORIZ

Raised on the North side of Chicago with a Brooklyn upbringing, Coriz is an innovative singer/songwriter combining the sound of neo-soul, R&B and Hip Hop in a collaborative form. She brings to you a classy sex appeal that is sure to capture any audience and tantalize you with her textured unique voice. Her uniqueness combines the art of rap, singing and songwriting in a form that can not be compared to any artist in the music industry today. Her voice has been compared to Fantasia, Macy Gray and Lil Mo.

At the age of 5, Coriz began her journey in writing music. She has composed for some of the biggest names in the music industry and has ghosted written up until the age of 22. She started completing her own projects at the age of 19.

The name Coriz (chorus) is rather unique. How did you come up with the name?

Well this name was given to me by an artist in Chicago that noticed I wrote a lot of hooks for other artists. Every time that I wrote one it would be catchy. So he tagged me with the name Chorus and we got a little bit more creative and attached the IZ at the end and removed the H. The name also reminds me of the core of something. I always believed in the Babyface formula-To start with the hook/chorus and build from there. The hook is the core of the song. So it is all so metaphoric for the Core is. You can't have a complete song without a Coriz.

Explain your upbringing in Brooklyn, and raised on the North-side of Chicago, also how has that influence your music style?

I rose in the time where hip hop was truly genuine and wasn't about the imagery that we have now. It was in its origins and it was more about what was being said. New York was the origins of Hip Hop and where it all took place. Artist emerged from left and right. My mom was born and raised in Brooklyn and would travel with me back and forth to New York from Chicago. She would go to Hip Hop battles with me and we would watch in awe. I was a tiny tot but took to it like air. I absolutely loved it. Most of my Mom's family is from New York and I go visit them often. I have entered into shows in New York and connected with many people. Its kind of like Kanye's relationship with Atlanta, he lived in Chicago but would go to Atlanta in the summer to go visit his Dad. From the musical styles of New York and Chicago are intertwined in my music. You get a little bit of both because I took to both cultures. They are apart of me.

You took to music at an early age and have stuck with it, who introduced you to music and what do you remember most about that experience?

I was introduced to music by my parents. My Dad used to be an 80's dj and my mom sang. Mostly cover songs. I remember being clued to the TV watching the Pointer Sisters, Chuck Berry, Buddy Guy, George Clinton, Michael Jackson, and Whitney Houston, BB king, Mint Condition, and Babyface. I loved it. My Grandmother would gather us around and play the piano to half the artists that I named. So it was always around me but I was a sponge and snatched it up. I just decided to leak my talents accrued with some of the greatest artists of all time. I started out as a dancer at 12 years old, I had not built up enough courage to sing as of yet. Singing and writing was my own personal outlet that I only shared when I was asked to. I’m not that selfish anymore.

Your style is different then what most artists are doing today, what do you contribute that too, and what stands out about your music?

I don't box myself in. I try to write what I feel is needed for a track that is given to me and adjust to it. If its Hot, its Hot. Whether rock, pop, or R&B. I try to stay versatile and interconnect all of my talents, some more then others. I don't feed into the commercial uproar and try to stay educated. Give them what they want but also give them what they need. This has worked so far for me. I think once an artists finds their niche they need to stick with it but also expand on it. Try different things that work not things that, might work. I try to write singles and not album fillers. I'm glad that I stand out without even trying to. I try to also follow the steps of the greatest artists and advance where they could not advance.

Have you worked with anyone, or done any projects for artists in the industry?

Yes. I have done some ghostwriting for Paperboy, Bo Deal, Lupe, KATO (RIP), Danny boy, and have future projects lined up for up and coming artists. I have decided now to take it further and work on my own projects while helping other artists build their careers.

During the duration of writing music what projects have you worked on?

I have worked on the Soul Out-Never Done Mixtape, Paperboys Mixtape, and Bump J's Mixtape, I am currently wrapping up my own project that is self titled. I have even worked with an artist that is in Senegal. His name is PrimeTime. I’m trying to go international.
