"Toronto-based metal messiahs Decatur - comprised of Jay “Beard” Sarrazin (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Tiny Basstank (Bass/Backup Vocals), Steve “Animal” Mitchell (Drums/ Backup Vocals), Full Album Stream Of Debut Album "Badder Than Brooklyn" Premiered By Decatur"

Toronto-based metal messiahs Decatur - comprised of Jay “Beard” Sarrazin (Lead Vocals/Guitar), Tiny Basstank (Bass/Backup Vocals), Steve “Animal” Mitchell (Drums/ Backup Vocals), and Liam Maguire (Guitar/Backup Vocals) - are a day away (Friday, October 6th release date - pre-order the album here) from dropping the monster debut album "Badder Than Brooklyn." Why wait, though? The band has teamed up with MetalUnderground.com to premiere the entire album today! Check it out in the player at the bottom.
Decatur has sensed the hunger from metal fans for proper metal with real songs, music built on the foundations of the past to last far into the future. Make no mistake, Decatur are a band that puts the grit into integrity, as guitarist/vocalist Jay ‘Beard’ Sarrazin says, Decatur make “real metal for real metalheads.”
Named after the band's very own Street of Dreams in New York, where the debut album was recorded - Silvercord Studios in Brooklyn - Decatur gets its unique sound by being opened-minded, not just to each other in this band of brothers, but to different genres, not just of metal, but also the blues, rock ‘n’ roll and even pop! Decatur’s criteria if it’s good they can make it better! The band focuses on evolution not devolution. There is no fear of Decatur repeating itself musically; for the band…the world is not enough. Decatur is an intrepid explorer, never playing it safe, always looking for new lands to conquer, and in the process drawing on creative powers the group has never known it possessed.
"Badder Than Brooklyn" was produced by Joe Duplantier of Gojira and is all-killer, no filler, and it doesn’t hide behind its production; it compliments it. These are truly songs of power and empowerment, a clarion call for strength in life’s battles…healing through headbanging. From the power shredding of “Into The Night” and the storytelling of “Badder Than Brooklyn” to the brutal beat down of songs like “Bottled Inside” and “Internal War”, Decatur feel modern metal has lost its way and they’re here to provide the roadmap forward to the future!
Vocalist/guitarist Jay Sarrazin says: "Working on this record was a dream come true for us. We were honoured to be able to work with Joe Duplantier. His vision and knowledge of music is so vast that he opened up so many gates for us. There are so many musicians in the world but very few true artists and Joe is definitely one of the artists. Getting the chance to work side by side with him was an amazing experience for us. This album turned out better than we hoped. We put a lot of time and effort into the final product. We really scrutinized every piece of it. Our goal was to bring metal back to its hay day. To write a great album and not just a great single. We definitely created something original with this album. Something that's not happening in metal at the moment. It's for real fans of real metal. We couldn't be more excited to take this across Canada to kick off the tour. You should expect us to come for the kill live. We are very excited to unleash this album on the world and to start touring it."
The track listing for the album is:
1. Internal War (2:56)
2. Into The Night (3:45)
3. Vegas Girl (3:46)
4. Worst Enemy (3:10)
5. Badder Than Brooklyn (3:56)
6. Bottled Inside (3:13)
7. Tear You (3:10)
8. Abaddon (3:48)
9. Shatterproof (3:51)
10. Internal War Pt. 2 (4:47) - Metal Underground

"Review – Decatur"

Album: Badder Than Brooklyn
Release Date: Oct. 6h, 2017
Genre: Real Metal for Real Metalheads \m/ \m/

One Line Review: Toronto-based Decatur, with their debut release Badder Than Brooklyn, has created a metal album for metal’s sake, a traditionally fast, heavy riffing, drivingly intense set of tunes to be included on an FM radio station in the next installment of Grand Theft Auto playing between Megadeth’s “Holy War…The Punishment Due”, Metallica’s “Battery”, and right after Pantera’s “Walk”.

Full Review:

Remember a time when metal had shredding riffs, technical playing, melodic hooks, discernable affected vocals, and more accelerating drive than crashing a cop car through a crowd of innocent pedestrians, prostitutes and priests in Grand Theft Auto Vice City?

So does Decatur, and they are preaching the gospel of the Golden Age of Modern Metal!

The self-exalted, yet deservingly titled “metal messiahs”, Decatur bandmates Jay “Beard” Sarrazin (lead vox/guitar), Tiny Basstank (bass/backup vox), and Steve “Animal” Mitchell (drums/ backup vox), and live show addition Liam Maguire (guitar/backup vox), with their debut album Badder Than Brooklyn, have created an album of old-school metal gold smelted with modern delivery and self-exploring discovery.

Badder Than Brooklyn feels familiar yet foreign, established yet exciting, influenced yet original, a classic metal record mixed with inventiveness and excitement and like meeting your best-friend’s best-friend you never knew they had.

From the onset, listeners are prepared for an intense listening experience with cover art that looks like a graphic on a GTA, or Madworld, cinema level, a darkened, animated street splattered with blood stains and tire tracks.

(A reviewer’s friend has started a video series of following a set of bloody wheelchair marks that have been appearing on a regular basis in her downtown neighbourhood. A character from the Badder Than Brooklyn cover art perhaps, come to life like a demented version of the A-Ha “Take On Me” video?)

Discussing Decatur’s over-all musical vision, vocalist and guitarist Jay Sarrazin says, “We honestly feel like metal has lost its way a bit and we were set on writing something original and not following the trends of today such as low tunings, aggressive growling and perfectly lined up music and sound.”

He continues, “We focused on the realness of ourselves and wanted to produce something that wasn’t always perfect and was as real and as honest as we could be.” Decatur’s musical honesty is abundant on Badder Than Brooklyn adding a sense of earnest sincerity from track to track.

Continuing with the idea musical, and lyrical, honesty, Decatur explains the concept of the record by saying it, “is to give those who struggle with mental illness a place to feel safe or a place to feel like they are not alone. That there are others out there going through the exact same feelings and emotions as they are and hopefully listening to this record makes them feel a little calmer, a little safer, a little less alone.”

Their debut album Badder Than Brooklyn, produced by Joe Duplantier (Gojira), is named after their very own “Street of Dreams” in New York, where they recorded their debut album at Silvercord Studios in Brooklyn. With the searing opening of “Internal War”, the metal-grove influence of “Vegas Girl”, the steady pulse-drive of “Tear You”, to the melodic instrumental closer “Internal War pt. II”, Decatur pays homage to metal influences such as Megadeth, Metallica, Pantera and In Flames while adding their own signature sounds and original songwriting.

Masterfully played and cleanly produced, Badder Than Brooklyn is traditional, contemporary and timeless, the Grim Reaper’s grain of sands sifting between the past and present in his eternally clutched hourglass.

As a reviewer who is known for going into overly-long, indulgently exalted reviews, I feel the need to be concise and pointed with the same sense of precision Decatur brings to their debut album, despite the already over-all length of this review.

Listeners can hear the honest urgency and loving delivery on every tune, the music being the message and the message being metal!

Add Badder Than Brooklyn as part of the canonical, all killer no filler, metal section of your music library!

"Decatur: Badder Than Brooklyn"

Music should be something that makes you gotta move, inside or outside.
– Elvis Presley – izQuotes

Sit still while listening to the latest DECATUR album, Badder Than Brooklyn.

I dare you.

Self-released by the Toronto-based band on October 6th, Badder Than Brooklyn brings it hard and fast and doesn’t let up until the very end. Opening tracks “Internal War”, “Into The Night” and “Vegas Girl” bleed one into the other with scraping guitar runs and heavy drum beats that get your attention and hold on fast. “Worst Enemy” stalks you with it’s opening volley of riffs and rhythms. Title track, “Badder Than Brooklyn”, is relentless and heart pounding. The album continues running down darker paths with “Bottled Inside”, “Tear You”, “Abaddon” and “Shatterproof”. It isn’t until the last song, instrumental “Internal War pt. 2”, that things let up so you can catch your breath. The break doesn’t last long, however, as the work quickly ramps back up with a collective jam session that brings to light the group’s musical talents.

DECATUR is clear the inspirations behind the album are the internal battles with mental illness and healing through headbanging. The songs are intended to connect with those who struggle and let them know “there are others out there going through the exact same feelings and emotions.” Lead vocalist Jay Sarrazin states, “We did not need or want to hide behind production. … Our goal was to produce something from the soul, not from the computer.”

The result is the kind of music that makes you edgy, keeps you moving and won’t let you rest. Great for a pounding run or a body-wrecking workout, Badder Than Brooklyn will satisfy fans of metal, hard rock, or good old-fashioned rock and roll.

Badder Than Brooklyn released October 6th 2017 and was produced by Joe Duplantier (Gojira).

Bio

Decatur is a metal band based out of Toronto, Canada. Comprised of Jay "Beard" Sarrazin (Lead Vocals/Guitar) Tiny Basstank (Bass/Backup Vocals) Steve "Animal" Mitchell (Drums/ Backup Vocals) and Liam Maguire (Guitar/Backup Vocals) Decatur has a sound of their own.  A force to reckon with, that's loud and proud, these Canadian born musicians draw their sound from many places, bands and genres.

Taking inspiration from the thrash kings like Metallica, Slayer and Pantera and combining it with bands like Lamb of God, Killswitch Engage and In Flames, Decatur touches all spectrums of metal and aren't afraid to spread their wings and try something different and daring. From the hard partying chants of their single “Vegas Girl” and the story telling of “Badder Than Brooklyn” to the brutal beat down of songs like “Bottled Inside” and “Internal War”, Decatur is dedicated to writing actual songs and albums and bringing metal back to the era of long lasting music that can be listened to for years to come.

Their obsession with growing and their relentless hard work shows in their live performances and in their non-stop attitude to take the next step in bringing real metal back to the world and to the fans from the 80's all the way to the present. With years of touring in their other bands (Caym, Burning The Day, A Sin For A Prayer) this local super group is hungrier than ever and excited to show their dominance as a force to reckon with in the Canadian metal scene and soon worldwide.
