"Brian Jessel BMW Fashion Gala 2007"

The 2nd Annual Brian Jessel BMW Fashion Gala look place May 3rd and was once again a high end experience. Like last year’s show, the caliber of this year’s event was clearly over and above any other local events that I’ve previously attended . . . Guests were treated to an open bar that served fine wines, martinis, and yes, even high end beers, while Vancouver’s finest high end restaurants served exquisite appetizers to Vancouver’s Elite in attendance. . . meanwhile, a live band called “Token Rhyme” played on in the background as attendees made their way into the venue. Charity auction tables where generous local businesses donated some wonderful prizes, also lined the venue, hoping to grab the highest possible bids and raise a load of money for some great charities...

"Relay an Honourable Tribute"

by Hannah Sutherland, 29 May 07

In a tribute to those affected by cancer, people will gather Friday to run, jog or walk in a non-competitive 12-hour relay called Relay for Life.

Teams of eight or more will take turns on the track at Centennial Park in the fourth annual event presented by the Canadian Cancer Society.

Participants will camp out in tents decorated with their team’s name.

A celebration of hope and survival, the relay aims to register more than 50 teams with more than 500 participants, and raise $150,000.

So far, $39,294 has been raised in online pledges alone.

The first lap of every Relay for Life across Canada is dedicated to, and walked by, cancer survivors. The Victory Lap offers survivors the opportunity to share their success and thank those who helped them.

A luminary celebration, the Ceremony of Hope will be held at dusk to honour those who have battled cancer. Candles in fire-retardant paper bags are placed around the track, each one featuring the name of someone who has either survived cancer or lost their life to the disease. The candles provide the light and inspiration through the night.

MLA Gordon Hogg (Surrey-White Rock) and White Rock Coun. Catherine Ferguson, Relay For Life Master of Ceremonies, will kick off the night with the help of TV meteorologist Mark Madryga and Mike Glass, CCS Fraser Valley regional manager, during opening ceremonies at 7 p.m.

Musical guests will include Tyra Hougaard, Pacific Showtime Men’s Choir, Roger Currie & Bruce Webster, Token Rhyme, Dennis Pook, Chris Thornley and Friends, Tom Saunders, and Mike Kirby.

Other entertainment and activities includes belly dancing, a pajama parade, movies, massages, dancing and music.

Register online as a participant or team, a volunteer, a survivor, a corporate sponsor or a donor. Centennial Park is located at 14600 North Bluff Rd. For more information visit www.cancer.ca or call 778-552-5819.

Bio

Token Rhyme is a song-driven acoustic/electric chamber folk-rock ensemble with a sonic versatility honed in intimate coffeehouses, outdoor festivals, theatre concerts and corporate galas. Principal songwriters Sean and Tracy have reworked and revived their older tunes for the new group, and have been inspired by the band chemistry to pen a steady collection of new songs. “We play for the sheer joy and privilege of it, of being able to make some noise to make a point, with subtle and not-so-subtle social commentary.” This line-up has been together for nearly four years. Its inception began as jams in early '04 with Sean and Allan, finally spawning in the summer of '05 after picking up James and Will at weekly jams in South Surrey. The band has a full set of original material, distilled and inspired from a wide palette of Americana country-blues, modern folk artists, and iconic rockers. The players each bring their own sensibilities to the arrangements; Tracy with her dynamic vocal delivery and presence; Sean’s solid rhythmic structure, Allan with his prairie rock history, James’ post-punk/reggae leanings, and Will’s tireless commitment to guitar tones and textures. Guest players include locals John Laird on mandolin & lap steel, and violinist Tina Kelly.
