"An Ode To the Umbrella- Disk Review"

Soundspell is made up of five boys not old enough to buy alcohol, the oldest one at 18 years old. On their debut, counting 10 songs, they demonstrate unusual musicianship for such youngsters. The songs are excellent indie music a la Coldplay or Keane with a soft piano playing a big part, but it is the angelic voice of singer Alexander Briem that makes this stand out from the average brit-pop sounding bands. The production is good and the packaging professional. In fact this does not sound like a debut at all, but instead a mature work of art. A few of these songs will definitely make it into daytime radio. Soundspell play Airwaves in October. A sure thing to check out. Recommended. - Grapevine, Reykjavík

Bio

While their 5 members range from only 17 to 18 years old, Soundspell's music defies their young age. Their fully matured sound blends the pop sensibilities of bands like Coldplay and Muse run through the blender of more adventurous bands like Radiohead and Sigur Rós. The end result is a sound that is once experimental yet melodically memorable, truly global but still uniquely Icelandic. The band has struck a unique blend that seems to be attracting an audience of fans from 10 to 60 years old.

In less than two years together Soundspell have developed a strong catalog of songs, performed on national television and radio, signed their first record deal and have began to create some buzz internationally. They attracted the attention of Los Angeles based producer Ronan Chris Murphy (King Crimson, Ulver, Terry Bozzio, Steve Morse...) who traveled to Reykjavík in the summer of 2007 and teamed up with Icelandic producer Albert Ásvaldsson to record their first album "An Ode to the Umbrella", which was released on Tuddi Records in Iceland and is currently being shopped to larger labels in the United States and Europe. The band’s first single, "Pound," is already receiving significant airplay in Iceland and won First Place in the Teen category in the International Songwriting Competition 2007.
