"The Sweet Spot"

Believe it or not, Houston isn't just a breeding ground for rappers with diamond encrusted grills, as recent discoveries MC's Mike Jones and Paul Wall have shown. There are other things popping beneath the surface, like female vocalists ready to add melodious sultriness to any alt-dance groove they get served. That's the best way to describe this compilation, which shows just how much talent Space City is keeping underwraps. Michele Thibeaux, Cyd Marie and Karina Nistal are a few of the grand dames who appear repeatedly throughout the album, with producers Rebel Crew captain Joe B. and Mark Sound choosing a bevy of sounds to accompany these ladies' vocal riffing. Whether it's Shina Rae getting the electronic dub treatment on "Threefold" or Kash getting exotically remixed by San Fran DJ Gavin Hardkiss on "Tantra", the album takes a different turn with each track. This makes The Sweet Spot one of the few dance albums that doesn't sound like a repetitive loop. This satisfying mix of women and song couldn't be sweeter. - Philadelphia Weekly

Bio

After 3 long months in the studio, Shina Rae is ready for the world to hear what she has to say. Her vocal assault on the microphone is matched only by the in your face production on her forthcoming album.

Shina choose to work with producer Traey Hatch at Houston's Tierra Studios. "After 3 months of work, we took some of the tracks around to see what people thought of the album.." Traey says, "I was shocked with the amount of positive response".

Traey Hatch has been collecting classic synthesizers for close to 10 years, the result is Tierra Studios, "Studio C" which is basically floor to ceiling packed with classic MOOG's, the Juno 106, and specifically Elektron's Machine Drum and Sid Station which were used heavily on this album. "The day I picked up the Elektron Sid Station, I was playing around with the device, and singer/songwriter Shina Rae just showed up, unannounced. Three months later we have 9 songs. "

Aaron Morris, Creative Director at Tierra Music Publishing was blown away with the results. Quickly signing all 9 songs to Tierra Music Publishing, Aaron proceeded to prepare a demo for the fall conferences. "CMJ was just about 6 weeks away when I first heard all the songs. We had to make a quick decision to pick a single and get it up to New York in time to see what we could get done."

The three agreed the "Touch" should be the first single. After that Aaron went right to work at getting the demo ready. This included getting a club remix from DJ/Producer DJ Eddie Spettro and a distribution agreement from "Public Access Recordings" New Zealand Record Label Head Ben Senior. "After we heard what Ben and Eddie did with the track we knew we had something special."

Tierra Music Publishing signed all 9 songs and quickly pressed a demo including the original, the remix, the original instrumental and even accapella. "We wanted to make this demo as accessible to the DJ's and Remixers as possible.." says Aaron, "once the single started getting leaked, remix request have been flooding in from underground house names like Ken Christensen of East Coast Boogiemen fame, to Derrick Carter. "Right now we'd love to get some more DJ's and Remixers on board, like Chromeo, Flosstradomas, or the L.A. Riot guys" says Aaron, "Yea, we love those guys." says Shina.
"At this point we are just so excited to be able to bring this music out to the world, and for it to be received so well, Touch is a great song, we are going to try and see if we can get this one placed in time for the full length. The album is so diverse, with ballads and dance floor smashes, we really expect to see a lot from this project."
