"Regional music act opens The Norva on Sunday"

Thursday, August 02, 2007

A local favorite on the music scene, Joe Gosman, is taking his act to the big stage in Norfolk.

Gosman can be seen frequently performing Friday nights at the City Wine Sellar along Elizabeth City's waterfront. But Sunday, Gosman will be headlining for national recording artists Fountains of Wayne at The Norva.

It's a big moment for the veteran performer. Gosman is a Chesapeake, Va., native with Elizabeth City roots.

Billed as an "artist and musician who not only entertains individuals through chorus and melody, but reaches their soul ... " Gosman's music has been compared to the likes the Goo Goo Dolls, James Taylor and Match Box 20.

With nearly a decade of experience as a musician, singer, songwriter and entertainer, Gosman has performed at a number of venues as a solo artist. These days, however, he's backed up by fellow musicians Henrique Gomes on drums and "Battle" Steve Robison on bass.

Opening for Fountains of Wayne at The Norva is a chance of a lifetime for Gosman.

"Every day is a new day, a chance to make up for lost time, and a chance to make right the wrongs. I play my songs, love people and am thankful for every new day I am given."

Taking things one day at a time, Gosman and his band mates are building a solid foundation in regional music. - The Daily Advance

"Q+A with alternative singer Joe Gosman"

Thursday, January 4, 2007

Chesapeake's Joe Gosman released his debut CD in the fall of 2005 titled, "Where Is Home?" The alternative and acoustic rocker/guitarist has been performing for close to four years, playing locally and doing a few gigs at universities in Virginia and Tennessee.

So, just what is Gosman's music all about? "If there were two words to describe me, I would want them to be: Passion and Character," he wrote in an e-mail. He gets his inspiration from relationships.

Check him out Saturday at Java Junction in Chesapeake.

Have you ever been stiffed by a venue, and what happened?
I showed up to a gig one night, and they had double-booked me along with a disc jockey. This happens from time to time.

What is your earliest musical memory?
Seeing my father play "House of the Rising Sun." The amount of energy he put into the song was tremendous, and his ability to have the complete attention of the whole room awed me.

What's your worst performance memory?
I was playing at a place one night, and some people wanted to hear a Neil Diamond song. I love Neil Diamond, but didn't know any. They decided to start singing "Sweet Caroline," and the whole place joined in. What did I do? I joined in with them. As long as everybody is having a good time, I'm fine. So, I guess that isn't too bad of a memory.

If signed to a record deal, how would you spend the advance?
There is no question about this. The recording. Any smart musician is going to spend the advance on their first recording for the label. This is assuming that the rent is taken care of. Food is important also.

If you could write your own headline, what would it be?
Music inspired by life to inspire change.
