"Detour to success by JC Lockwood"

http://garyshane.com/press.html

The music, now old enough to drink in every state in the country, was born during the days of skinny ties and power-pop, during the brief era of the so-called new wave - a time when an unsigned, local band could still make it on the strength of a few good tunes and a lot of hustle. And that's exactly what the Detour did in the early '80s.

Led by Ipswich rocker Gary Lavenson - better known as Gary Shane - the Detour scored a huge hit right out of the box with "Johnny's Coaltrain," the guitarist's homage to jazz legend John Coltrane. How big was it? A monster. A tune that topped the WBCN charts for weeks, pulling down some of the biggest numbers the Rock of Boston had ever seen.

Discography

Discography
The first release was the 45 "Stepped On" (and B-side "Love My Baby
Like a Car" by the Shane Champagne Band. Then came the six-song, 10-
inch vinyl EP called simply, "Shane Champagne." Then Gary Shane and
the Detour released "Forever On Your Way," its first full length
album, and the singles "Johnny's Coaltrain" as well as "Man n
Machine," both of which were huge regional hits. Then there was
"Condos on the Moon" by Alan Laddd and the Abashed," the country band
featuring a thinly disguised Shane as the frontman — and which
actually opened for the Detour in the mid-1980s. Shane continued to
create music through the 1990s, releasing "Love is the Liquor," a
single with dub mix and reggae style, with the Free Radicals; "Saddle
Up," by the Silvertones; and, notably, "In Perspective" — a 15-song
CD that collected the songwriter's big hits and some interesting side
trips. The Detour has also released several Live CDs. In 2005 came
"Sheila's Picks, a lovely 10-song CD made from Love.

Bio

Biography
From the band The Detour to the Silvertones, from the Abashed to the
"Free Radicals — back as far as Shane Champagne — Gary Shane
projects has been making an impact. The album "Forever On Your Way,"
with its stellar title cut exploring issues of lost friendship and
longing and love, was the first vinyl EP in 1982. There was three CDS
releases in 1995: "Saddle Up" by the Silvertones, "Love is the
Liquor" by the Free Radicals, and "In Perspective, the complete
collection of the 'radio hits' with the number one songs like
"Johnny's Coaltrain," "Shadow World" and "Man n Machine" — the Big
Mattress song of the week on WBCN radio back in the day. Now, in 2008
there are a few current songs gaining notoriety and airplay, like
"Man on the Keys" and "Lovely Sheila." They are available on cdbaby
and garageband.com and through garyshane.com. They were released
independently since Johnny V has sold the Pure and Easy record label
and now just does graphics and posters for all the shows and gigs.
Gary also plays with his band "the Silvertones" (like his guitar) and
he also plays with his country ensemble called "Alan Laddd and The
Abashed," with the hit song "Condos on the Moon.” Another Shane
project called the "Magnificent Bastards" are also known to appear at
small coffee houses and open mic nights around town.
Gary has played with rock royalty like CHEAP TRICK, AEROSMITH and THE
CARS, as well as also many other national acts like IAN HUNTER and
MICK RONSON, GREG KIHN, NICK LOWE, ANDY PRATT, STEVE FORBERT and even
GENTLE GIANT. He has sold thousands of CDs worldwide and even selling
in Japan and in Europe.See garyshane.com
