Andy presents Latin jazz on his album “From My Roots”. He opens things with “I Like the Cha Cha Cha” and brother I like the Cha Cha Cha too, especially his version, which features a bit more soul than you typically find on this type of release. Sure it’s low-budget but the most important thing is the quality of the music, which thankfully is superb. “Suburb” and “Symbiosis” are distracting with their more electronic feel. Unfortunately the liner notes are in Spanish, which I as a stupid typical American can’t read.

Eine gelungene Symbiose aus lateinamerikanischen Rhythmen, Elektrogrooves und Saxophonklängen bringt der auf Gran Canaria beheimatete Kubano-Spanier Andy Moreno mit seiner vorliegenden Platte zu Gehör. Erstaunlich ist auf den ersten Hör die exzellente Klangqualität, die bei offensichtlichen Low-Budget-Produktionen wie der vorliegenden keineswegs selbstverständlich sind. Einige der Tracks sind eher elektronisch orientiert ohne seelenlos zu klingen, andere bringen vor allem die lateinamerikanischen Wurzeln des Musikers per Steeldrum und Percussion in den Vordergrund. Dazu gibt's noch interessante, einfallsreiche Melodien, die sich an eher amerikanischen Jazzvorbildern wie Pat Metheny ausgerichtet zu haben scheinen. Die Songs sind gemeinsam mit dem auf afrokubanische Musik spezialisierten Drummer und Perkussionisten Oriel Ray Montero unter der Klangregie von Javier Ramírez, dem Toningenieur des alljährlichen Gran Canaria Jazz Festivals eingespielt. Und so klingen sie auch: professionell und frisch. Mehr davon!!!

Considerando la calidad general del disco resultó complicado seleccionar una pista, pero al final elegimos "Suburb".
¿Por qué? ¡Solo tienes que escuchar ese groove saltarin! que Maceo Parker sacaría de una sala llena de chips de ordenadores.
El tema nos evoca imágenes de Röysopp sudando tinta china en un estudio con Herbie Hancock.
