"-Paul Gaita"

The temptation to apply homemade (and half-baked) descriptive phrases like Òfiercer than King GhidorahÓ or Òriffs sharper than a samurai swordÓ to this U.S. debut disc from Japanese punk ladies Gito Gito Hustler is almost too strong to resist, so IÕm simply gonna say that the Hustler-ettes sling the Super Rock with a heavy dose of go-go and Ô60s pop, and thatÕs more than okay in my book. TheyÕre also refreshingly free of the cutie-pie mannerisms that sink a lot of Japanese girl bands (at least in my book Ð I wonÕt speak for all guys), though I couldÕve lived without with the 5,6,7,8s-style surfinÕ swing of ÒHyperÓ Ð itÕs not done badly, itÕs just been done far too often, and things like it occasionally inspire idiots to start doing that Pulp Fiction dance. And yeah, the whole album is in Japanese, but that doesnÕt dampen the fact that the songs are infectious as hell, especially the manic ÒNatural Love Love Star,Ó and will buzz around in your brainpan like bees in stiletto heels long after the disc stops spinning.

BUMPERSHOT Review

Gito Gito Galore - (Gearhead)

Okay, I obviously don't know what the hell Gito Gito Hustler are singing about since my Japanese is a little rusty but it sure sounds like they're having fun. I know I am. Gito Gito Galore charges out of the gate with "Muscle Body Ecstasy" - the most frantic thrasher here and one that falsely lures you into thinking you have the band figured out. Things take a pretty dramatic turn when Fusa, Tae, Yago, and my new guitar hero Mitsuko show they're pop smarts on "Ambition" - which they do without compromising the sheer power these ladies produce.

We've come to expect Japanese bands to be the ultimate in pop culture junkiedom (at least since the likes of Shonen Knife's "Twist Barbie"), and Gito Gito Hustler is no exception. They sound like a heavier Cramps on "Melon Sherbert", and show their weakness for power chord hookiness on "Sunflower". All the right ingredients here, folks.

The only real disappointment here is that it is only a 6-song EP. Still, I shouldn't complain too much. I mean, I can always just play it twice, right?

Right!
Gito Gito Hustler = Teengenerate + Supersnazz + Shonen Knife + The Shirelles
Now this is what I?fm talkin?f about! Raw, energetic Japanese garage-punk
with a penchant for poppy hooks. These girls know how to have fun, and
Gito Gito Galore proves that. Lyrics occasionally flirt with Engrish, but
are mostly sung in Japanese; if you know Japanese, you?fll definitely be
singing along, cause this is catchy stuff. I need to let it be known that
while the music here is poppy and occasionally bubbly, wimpy it is not!
The drums hit hard and fast, the guitars are loud to the point that the
amps might explode at any moment, and the production keeps things in the
red at all times. My only complaint?\because something would be askew if I
were not complaining?\is that there are only six songs and Gito Gito Galore
ends before you know it. That?fs forgivable, though. Gearhead really picked
a winner with this one. ?

Americans always fall in love with Japanese girl Pop bands. Why? Well, they are really, really cute. People forget though, that behind the porcelain doll faces are profoundly talented musicians.

We fell for The 5, 6, 7, 8s in Kill Bill: Volume 1, acting like Japanese Pop was a new concept, and actually the style has been around for years. So while Guitar Wolf led the alpha-male way for Japanese Rock nÕ Roll fury, girl bands like Gito Gito Hustler, Supersnazz, Ex-girl, Shonen Knife, and 54 Nude HoneyÕs are chartering their own territory for music. Gito Gito Hustler impressed Gearhead Records enough to release Gito Gito Galore, a six-song tea and cake EP recording, and even lucky collectors can score the purple marble vinyl 45rpm in 78 format size.

The four Gito gals put a serious punk punch on the track ÒMelon SherbetÓ, which is a gracious bow away from traditional girl Pop that generally can get old. The band formed in 1995 in Kyoto and has performed at CBGBÕs in NYC and recently at SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. They cover all the grand points of rocking from power chords to catchy couplets, even though sung in Japanese, the songs are

nevertheless enchanting. More importantly, these ladies shy away from predisposed handed-down roles for more fully functional rock stars.

This album is a bit sweet, but not enough to coat the whole record. ItÕs time their listeners stop buying Hello Kitty and start wearing in those guitar straps. Sayonara!
