"Texas Calling Me Home"

Steve Simmons hails from Texas, a fact about which you are never in doubt at any point during 'Calling Me Home'. It is difficult to imagine a record more typical of that state. Simmons' music is heavier than much Texas country, seeming at points to take inspiration from southern rock and even ZZ Top. You're frequently confronted with a dense groove in which fiddle, harmonica and dirty electric guitar all vie for supremacy over a thunderous backbeat. It's a stew which reaches its apotheosis on the outro of the anthemic 'Texas Calling Me Home,' a muscular effort which doubtless goes down a storm live.

Simmons' are vocals robust enough to hold their own against the backing, and he has a distinctive phrasing which is always welcome. There are moments in which his almost pugilistic delivery suggests Warren Zevon, and considering the mordant nature of songs such as 'Bad Attitude' or 'Company Man,' this is rather appropriate. He can also recall that master of wry Texas country, Terry Allen, especially on the half-spoken '70 Model 3/4 Ton Ford'.

Bio

Steve Simmons new release "Texas Calling Me Home" is his second Paul Middleton produced project. Paul has taken Steve's down home country melodies and his topical lyrics and created a natural extension of Steve's first project "Broadway" With his 26 years experience engineering sound for Bonnie Raitt Paul has helped give Steve's music an edgy, bluesy feel without letting it get away from roots country. With relationship songs like "I Don't Know Why I Talk to You" and "Me and Mary" and tongue in cheek songs like "Tramp Stamp" and My Baby Can't Drink Wine" Steve covers a range of feeling and emotion dealt with in real life. Texas Music Times called the writing on Steve first CD "nothing short of genius" and with this new project Steve continues to create songs that entertain and make you think.

Steve Simmons is one of the best songwriters in Texas. His most recent project titled “Broadway” is filled with sad, funny, rocking, and honky-tonk style country songs. However, it is not so much the music or Steve’s vocals that make the record such a pleasure. It is the stories. His songs of Texas lifestyle are real without being stupid and just about drinking beer and chasing women. He is a songwriter to be respected. His wit can be heard in “Christi’s Avon and Tex Mex” and his passion in the story of war’s tragedy in “Casey”. The ability to have two songs on the same record that are both so good yet so different is nothing short of genius. Steve is set to return to the studio for some more recording soon.

Steve's debut CD "Broadway" was #1 at KBSO in Corpus Christi in April 2006.

"It makes my job a lot easier when I have good music to spin. I had to play "Lotto Tickets, Cigarettes and Keystone Light"...That songs tells the story of my life and a lot of other people's too, I imagine. You're always welcome here for a live pick n' grin. Keep up the good work."
