"“Anne Lindsay … cut the night air...""

“Anne Lindsay … cut the night air with a brilliant fiddle solo that proved to be one-third Ashley MacIsaac and two-thirds Jimi-Hendrix.”

"Anne Lindsay - News From Up The Street"

Fiddler Anne Lindsay is a thoughtful musician, staking out original territory for her violin voice.
The album, News from Up the Street, takes us on a jaunt not only up the street, but around the neighbourhood and, ultimately, outward bound.
As a composer, she creates tunes that are alternately appealing, cheerful, dance-inducing and introspective. The Silvery Slocan paints a vivid picture of a trip on B.C.‚s Slocan River, the bends in the river, with its unexpected landscapes and shifting moods reflected in unpredictable harmonies and changing tempos.
Lindsay has the grace to give plenty of room to her excellent roster of playmates. Multi-instrumentalist David Woodhead alternately anchors the fiddle with his bass and shimmers on the mandola. Jason Fowler‚s inventive guitar everywhere provides inspiration. The production is clear and open, with all voices being heard.
The best is saved for last. Wichita Fog is hypnotic, with compelling, almost train-like rhythms, and is Lindsay‚s most successful vocal of the disc. Concluding the album is a composition by Oliver Schroer which sounds like a conversation with God. Performed as a duet with Lindsay, the fiddles swoop and sigh, an outpouring of the yearnings and workings of the heart. And while the Divine response is not heard, Its presence is clearly felt. A consolidation of Lindsay‚s work thus far, and a delightful plunge forward.

News From Up The Street ***1/2
Anne Lindsay (Independent)

As musically inquisitive as she is accomplished, Toronto fiddler/violinist Anne Lindsay is all over the map on her delightful sophomore album. Country, Afro-pop, a jig, even Gershwin rub shoulders. And they do it with great neighborliness thanks to Lindsay’s impeccable but warm technique and the obvious kick she gets out of the music no matter what its origin.
Of course, Lindsay has been the Maple Leaf’s resident fiddler (hence the rollicking lead track He Shoots, He scores, played with both Irish tenor John McDermott and Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy, even worked in the orchestra pit for the Lord of the Rings stage show. Eclectic, you might say.
This time out, Lindsay also sings, the wistful title track being a particular treat.
Anne Lindsay plays the NAC’s Fourth Stage tonight.

ANNE LINDSAY PERFORMS AS A SOLO, DUO OR FULL BAND

Anne Lindsay has established herself as one of the most engaging and versatile instrumentalists in Canada, adapting her unique violin/fiddle style to the eclectic sounds and musical languages of this country’s rich cultural texture.
She recently won the 2011 OCFF Songs From The Heart – Instrumental Award and was a nominee for Instrumental Solo Artist of the Year at the 2011 Canadian Folk Music Awards. In 2007 Anne was named Violinist of the Year at the National Jazz Awards, Solo Instrumentalist and Producer of the Year at the 2007 Canadian Folk Music Awards. In 2006 she won both the KM Hunter Award from the Ontario Arts Council and the Songs From the Heart - Instrumental category from the Ontario Council of Folk Festivals.

Currently composing, performing and recording with her own band, Anne is also a much sought after side person, composer, arranger and background vocalist, performing with some of Canada’s top musical acts: Blue Rodeo, Jim Cuddy, John McDermott. She played a key role as folk fiddler in The Lord of the Rings stage show and has been resident fiddler for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Anne began her musical studies at the age of five, specializing in violin, piano and voice. A graduate of York University, Toronto (BFA Special Honors Music), the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto and the Banff Centre, Alberta.

Anne has performed and recorded with many major artists (Blue Rodeo, The Chieftains, Led Zeppelin, Roger Daltry, Dionne Warwick and Natalie McMaster), she has also composed and arranged music for documentary film scores, stage productions, CDs, radio and television commercials. Her fluency is evident in her wide-ranging repertoire, encompassing jazz, rock, classical, country, old-time fiddle, Celtic, Cajun, and Klezmer styles, and the recent addition of two new Scandinavian fiddles - the Finnish jouhikko and the Swedish nyckelharpa.

In addition to teaching at the Celtic College in Goderich Ontario and the Haliburton Winter Folk Camp she has traveled to Rankin Inlet in the Canadian Arctic to teach music to Inuit youth.

Her debut CD EAVESDROPPING received generous airplay nationwide on CBC and campus radio stations. Anne’s original compositions combine a warm roots feel with sophisticated rhythmic and harmonic sensibilities. Audiences across the country have been delighted by Anne’s innovative music, drawn from a palette of heartfelt ballads, hot club jazz, South Indian Karnatak, various root and folk styles and rocking fiddle driven grooves

Her sophomore CD, NEWS FROM UP THE STREET was co-produced by Oliver Schroer and brings all of her skill into fine focus on the 14 powerful tracks, featuring her wonderful band: Colleen Allen-saxophones, Al Cross–drums, Jason Fowler–guitar and David Woodhead–bass. What really sets it apart from the first CD is the addition of Anne’s heart-catching vocals, and her debut as a songwriter.

HURRY ON HOME continues the legacy — featuring Anne’s virtuoso playing and heartfelt vocals with a who’s-who of the Canadian contemporary music scene performing Anne’s twisty fiddle tunes, some sultry jazz, soulful gypsy and a hip hop beat! The CD is co-produced by Anne and her son, Tosh Weyman, a talented hip-hop artist and producer. The resulting album bridges both genres and generations with brilliant performances by musical friends. The title track “Hurry On Home”, is a neo-Appalachian duet with Jim Cuddy; “Valentine”, a poignant song about Valentine’s Day as a springboard into solitude; and “May Our Minds Meet” — think Cape Breton fiddle tune meets hip hop beats.

Anne’s playing is incomparably expressive, capturing the violin’s unique ability to sing like the human voice. With her innovative, yet down to earth compositions, and exquisite lyrics, Anne and her violin sing together in a universal language.
