"Album Review - How The Cowboys Swung The West"

Album: How the Cowboys Swung the West
Artist: The Stardust Cowboys
Here is a wonderful new album of 14 very enjoyable cuts from this very talented Western Swing group from Northern California. Again, as in their previous albums in the spotlight on vocals are husband and wife, Gary and Vicki Campbell. In addition, they are two very accomplished song writers with all but two of the songs from either one or both their pens. Gary is also heard playing guitar. The talent doesn't stop there.
Paul Sutherland is heard playing pedal steel guitar while Western Swing Hall of Fame members Ronnie Elkan and Olen Dillingham are the twin fiddlers and mandolin players. Bob Woods plays guitar while Joe Lev is featured on bass guitar. Ryan Goodpastor is heard playing drums and Duncan Elledge plays standup bass, guitar and harmonica. Conrad Nelson also plays harmonica. Vicki's brother, Ken Nilsson, is heard on harmony vocal on Picnic Basket.
The two that are not originals are the awesome Roger Brown/Luke Reed western gem, Blue Mesa and a very enjoyable version of Along the Navajo Trail from the great Roy Rogers, the Bing Crosby/ Andrews Sisters combo and the Gene Krupa big band. The originals include lots of very interesting tunes with a Western touch like the sure hit, the title tune, How the Cowboys Swung the West, Pirate of the Placers, Go'N North, with a south of the border flavor and Last Cattle Call. This album closing tune written in memory of Sal Sage follows a 48 second Tribute to Sal Sage. Another original future hit is the album opening tune Easier to Know. There are also two semi-inspirational tunes, Change My Heart and Butterflies in Heaven. Other originals are When We Dance, She's Always on My Mind and the beautiful love song, Wedding Vow.
The album can be obtained for $15 plus $5 S&H ($20) from starcow@ftcnet.net or 530-708-3426 or Stardust Cowboys, 20009 Redwood Ct., Foresthill, CA 95631.

"Sacramento Press"

Sacramento Press
by Scott Holbrook, published on March 20, 2009

This weekend rain or shine would be a great time to come on up. One event in particular has a special interest to me, as I am helping to put it on! Saturday, The Ridge Golf Course and Bar & Grill 2020 Golf Course Way, Auburn CA 95602 (530-888-PUTT) will be hosting a great evening of great "semi" acoustic music, featuring Bob Woods and Gary Campbell. Bob Woods is arguably one of the best guitarists in the Sacramento Region, be it going toe to toe with the legendary Albert Lee with Sticky Vikki and the Pinecones, or perhaps guitaring for the infamous Chuck Wagon (who can forget Chuck's claim to fame "Disco Sucks"!) Gary Campbell is a wonderful songwriter / singer / guitarist who has been playing Honky Tonks from Lodi to Verdi for many decades now, these 2 entertainers are guaranteed to please with their combination of songs from the saddle and rails (Bob in his other life really is a train engineer!) The warmup act (Dufour and Prior) will start around 7, Woods and Campbell will start around 8, but please come early. The Ridge is an award winning public golf course, and features a wonderful restaurant and full bar, Saturday Happy Hour starts at ! There is a request for a $5.00 donation for this show. The Ridge is off of Bell Rd. in between Highways 49 & 80 (if you come up between 4 & 7 and say you heard about the show on Sacramento Press the 1st beers on me!) - Scott Holbrook

"Calling All Cowboys - Chuckaroo the Buckaroo"

"I listened to it (Ridin' Back To You CD) again last night and will add it to my choices to draw from. I especially liked cover of the instrumental "Stardust." VERY well done. Very classy indeed!

"ALBUM Review - WMA Western Way Magazine"

When The Stardust Cowboys' lead vocalists Gary & Vicki Campbell harmonize they remind me a bit of Jack Blanchard & Misti Morgan (the "Tennessee Birdwalk" duo of old), but when the full harmony of the group joins in, there any similarity stops.

These folks have had a quarter century to get it right, and they seem to have made darn good use of their time! Most of the 11 tracks are nice original songs done with a mix of fleshed-out acoustic, twin fiddle and country steel instrumentation. I love the vintage Color Comics look of the cover, and the phrase on the CD's back "Dynagroove Living Stereo" brought a grin of recognition! This one should please most Country & Western fans and dancers definitely should plan to hit the floor.

Pick tracks are the tribute song "B-Western," the modern hoedown "She Loves To Dance," a swinger "Beaver Moon" and the title track "Ridin' Back To You," a sweet Western love song. This is another group that proves how good and how nicely diverse our Western Music genre has become!

"Around the Campfire - Heartland Public Radio"

-Marvin O’Dell, host of Around the Campfire radio show on Heartland Public Radio: "That's the Stardust Cowboys singing Ridin' Back To You. I just think Gary Campbell of the Stardust Cowboys has one of the clearest, finest voices singing western music today."

(AND referring to the song She Loves to Dance)
"Wow! talk about infectious.... that's the great Stardust Cowboys....
That's the kind of song that you just want to put on & play it again & again!"
- Marvin O'Dell (FEB 2010)

"KFOK Concert; feature Cowboy Music"

by Meg Smith/Meg's Meanderings
...Sharing the billing with Old West, and complementing the genre with their own brand of music, will be the Stardust Cowboys, a band from Foresthill dedicated to keeping cowboy, western swing, rockabilly & honky-tonk blues alive and well in these parts.
With a revolving cast of many, this performance will feature Gary Campbell, a long tall drink of water with a Tom Mix vintage-style cowboy hat, on lead guitar and vocals; his wife Vicki, the cutest little barefoot singer you ever did see, singing lead and backup vocals; Ronnie Elkan and Olen Dillingham on twin fiddles and mandolin, with Olen adding lead vocals to songs like the "Doghouse Blues"; Conrad Nelson on harmonica, vocals, humor and funk, think "Mustang Sally" cowboy-style; Duncan Elledge, aka Uncle Dunc, on standup bass and the newest member of the Stardust cast, Ryan "Thumper" Goodpastor on drums.
If you have any doubts about their creds, Gary, Vicki, Ronnie and Olen will just have returned from Seattle where they not only played at the NW Western Swing Hall of Fame, but were inducted as well. And that makes the second time for Ronnie and Olen.
I have to admit that I've followed this band for well over 20 years, so I am a little partial to them, but I heard them recently in Nevada City at the Chief Crazy Horse Inn, where they play from 3:30-6:30PM on the last Sunday every month, and where they performed most of the tunes from their new CD, "Ridin' Back To You," which will be available at the KFOK concert.
Except for two instrumentals, "Jesse Polka" and the timeless big band swing number, "Stardust", written by Hoagy Carmichael in 1927, the CD is filled with poignant originals penned either together or separately by Gary & Vicki.
The title song, "Ridin Back To You" was inspired by a Divide cowboy, Barney Dobbas, and the cowpokes that herded for him at the Dobbas Cow Camp near French Meadows in Placer Co. "B-Western" is a tribute to Gene Autry and his trusty sidekicks, Smiley Burnette & Pat Buttram, and all the cowboy movie singers who kept the settling of the west vividly alive in our minds.
"John Wayne Hero," written by Vicki, tells the story of her father who worked as a horseback game warden. "She Loves to Dance" gives a nod to the brave ladies that are first on the dance floor and was on the East Coast Western Swing Chart's Top Ten for 11 months.
Ending the 11-song CD is "Beaver Moon," inspired by Placer County's Sugarpine Lake, a canoe and the full moon - a Beaver Moon that shines every November - and the recommendation that everyone should try it.
All I can say is don't miss this opportunity... - Georgetown Gazette: Thurs Aug 15, 2009

"Album Review - Ridin' Back To You"

Album: Ridin' Back to You
Artist: The Stardust Cowboys
Here is a brand new album of 11 exciting cuts from a very talented Western oriented Western Swing group from Northern California. In the spotlight on vocals are husband and wife, Gary Alan and Vicki Campbell. In addition, they are two very accomplished song writers with nine of the songs from either one or both their pens. Gary Alan is also heard playing guitar. The talent doesn't stop there.
Western Swing Hall of Fame member Dave Wren is heard playing pedal steel guitar and Dobro while fellow Hall of Fame members Ronnie Elkan and Olen Dillingham are the twin fiddlers. Olen also is heard playing mandolin as did his mentor, the great Tiny Moore. Bob Woods plays guitar and electric bass while Steve Clark is featured on bass guitar and harmony vocals. Ryan Goodpastor is heard playing drums and Duncan Elledge plays standup bass. Conrad Nelson plays harmonica. Robert Metzler is heard playing drums and Jim Grey is the steel guitarist on She Loves to Dance, a previously issued hit single of the band that is included.
The two standards are the Cliff Bruner and Adolph Hofner memory Jesse Polka and an incredible 5:29 minutes instrumental version of Hoagy Carmichael's Stardust from the great Artie Shaw and Tommy Dorsey big bands. This time Dave plays some awesome steel. The originals include lots of very interesting tunes with a Western touch like B-Western, Ridin' Back to You, John Wayne Hero and Cow Camp Lullaby. A real treasure in this album is one about the home state of this band, California Mountains. The group again does another original gem of their beautiful part of the world, Beaver Moon. The remaining two originals are the inspirational God's Always Watchin' and a beautiful love song with a Western touch, If You Were Mine.
The album can be obtained for $15 plus $5 S&H ($20) from starcow@ftcnet.net or 916-708-3426 or Stardust Cowboys, Box 58, Foresthill, CA 95631. You can order both this new CD and their previous one, Honky Tonk Cowboy & the Desert Flower for $25 plus $5 S&H ($30).
