When seeing live music in Chicago, you usually know what's in store. In a city filled with cover bands and copy-cats, you begin to lose faith in the innovation of music. I walked into the Kinetic Playground on June 4th expecting to see, just another jam band. I expected to see a hazy crowd full of dreadlocks that oozed with patchouli.
What I got, was Mos Scocious. Mos Scocious is a band that has just released their debut album, "Ibble Dabble". Their performance was a mix of funk, hip-hop, rock, jazz, reggae and party music. They call their style "freak funk". This name seems quite appropriate when you listen to their intricate groovy songs about alligators and transvestite robots. The music and lyrics share a cleverness that doesn't exist in most other bands.
The album captures this experience perfectly. From start to finish, it is a musical journey that captures a fervor and restlessness that is almost reminiscant of a punk rock mentality. I am proud to say, I am a converted freak, a member of the freak funk army. Check out Mos Scocious at http://www.myspace.com/mosscocious - Blogspot

Bio
After being named Best Local Band by the Chicago Reader in 2010, Mos Scocious skyrocketed to midwest success including opening for George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic. Their live show is an in-your-face dose of freak funk. They have a knack for fusing different genres together, from afro-cuban and heavy metal to prog-rock and reggae. Lyrically, they are somewhere between Bill Shakespeare and Bill Murray. The poetic sensibility and sarcastic subject matter are a staple of any Mos Scocious show.
The members of Mos Scocious are very unique individually. Rob Dicke is a world class drummer whose rhythmic precision is matched only by his untamed enthusiasm. He comes from a background of Jazz with some hip hop and soul sprinkled in.
Josh Rosen brings the bottom heavy grooves straight to your ear hole. He has the rhythm of a drummer and the musicality of a guitar player, the bass is always groovin'. Josh has a background in folk, hip-hop, funk, ska, jazz and americana.
Bradley Butterworth has the heart and soul to keep your blood pumpin'. His rhythmic chords and crunchy guitar riffs are a giant part of any Mos Scocious show. He earned his stripes in the Classic Rock/Jam Band army, has studied Jazz and Classical Guitar and is an outstanding songwriter.
All of these different elements combined create an on-stage experience that is never the same twice. Leave your troubles behind and COME JOIN THE FREAK OUT!
