Set out for a cool night of mellow rock by Acoustic Son tomorrow night in Redwood City. The band will perform at Angelica's Bistro, after having just released their third album, "Cross the Line." Acoustic Son features lead singers Carolyn Walker Shaw and Ken Kingsbury, lead guitarist Rick English, bassist Scott Underwood and drummer Dan Lucas.

A year after their first two albums of acoustic rock, Shaw left the band, and Kingsbury and English started their own group, appropriately titled Kingsbury English.

"Then we were chatting one day," Kingsbury said, "and Carolyn looked over at me with a shy smile and I knew she was thinking, 'You know I'm ready to write more songs.'" This was the beginning of their new album "Cross the Line." At around the same time, Kingsbury and Shaw became engaged.

"When the group got back together," said Kingsbury, "it was about relationship, spiritual path, and what it is to be in the place where we are in our life right now.

A lot of people look at our songs as personal, it's music that's not just about the music, but the words." Guest stars on new album The new album brings together musicians from all sorts of genres, from all over the country, in order to create their unique sound. "We brought in the lead guitarist from Huey Lewis to guest spot on the album, Bill Spooner from The Tubes, the producer Bonnie Hayes (who) has written a number of Bonnie Raitt hits. There's local guests as well as our own band members." A tribute to 9/ 11 The band will be performing "Where Eagles Dare," a song Kingsbury wrote from a poem by Eric Weiss he found floating around the Internet in the days following Sept. 11, 2001.

"We'll perform that song as a tribute since it's a day before the anniversary of 9/ 11," Kingsbury said. "I never did anything with it until people were requesting Californian artists for a compilation of songs about 9/ 11. I had to go find the guy and get his permission to use the song on the CD." The band played Angelica's Bistro earlier this year for the release party of the new album.

"It's lots of fun, it's got that funky used-to-be antique feel," Kingsbury said, "Everybody's at dinner tables, they're right in front of the stage, it's intimate and lends itself to participation." Acoustic Son starts at 8:30 p.m., and dinner seating begins at 7 p.m.

Tickets cost $12 online, and $16 at the door plus dinner or twodrink/ appetizer minimum. Table reservations are required.

"KPFA radio"

“Blending broken-heart lyrics with richly textured melodies, Acoustic Son could be the next group to emerge from the long tradition of San Francisco singer-songwriter groups to reach the spotlight . . . In the long history of invention and recreation, Acoustic Son shines in the interpretive mood of the landscape of song.” — Tom Mazzolini, KPFA-FM, Berkeley - KPFA

"Performer Magazine on line"

“Acoustic Son’s self-released CD is an album of heartfelt ballads . . . An element of Wet Wet Wet and the Blow Monkeys infects the melodic tones . . . Acoustic Son seems ripe for the VH-1 Storyteller’s set.” — Mai Lee, PerformerMag.com - Performer Magazine

"Besonic scout review"

“. . . Ken Kingsbury and Carolyn Shaw should be walking on water with this superb accomplishment . . . What a very clever piece of enviable songwriting set to a backdrop of music that should be in someone’s hall of fame . . . I’ve been listening to Acoustic Son all day!”
— Colin Lynch, Besonic Scout - Besonic

"CDBaby review"

Hip arrangements, great harmonies

I first heard Acoustic Son at a gig. I was in awe. What had been missing from the SF Bay Area music scene for the last 25 years had unfolded before me: A band with strong lead and backing vocals, hip arrangements and lyrics that stir the senses. Wow. In an age of Ashlee Simpson, Brittany Spears, the Back Street Boys and InSync Acoustic Son is the precious relief from the hype of Plastic Surgery Pop music. Their 2nd CD "Time in the Middle" is a collection of precious insights to the soul, the everyday quandaryies of life and the precarious nature of love. You have to have this in your collection.

Bio

Carolyn Shaw and Ken Kingsbury met in late 2000 while singing at a performance workshop. They quickly connected vocally and Carolyn soon joined the newly formed Acoustic Son. Along with Mark Jacobson, Al Bedrosian and Nathan Taylor, they began writing songs together and performing around the Bay Area, drawing audiences with their lush harmonies and driving guitar rhythms. Their first CD debuted in 2002 and was followed in 2004 by their acclaimed CD “Time in the Middle” produced by Bonnie Hayes. Rick English joined the band as their lead guitarist in 2004 and has brought a rock infused flavor to their original music. In 2007 Ken and Rick started their project Kingsbury English putting out a CD of rock originals. Now working again with Bonnie Hayes Carolyn Shaw and Ken Kingsbury have released their 3rd CD - Cross the Line - teaming up with Rick English, Mark Jacobson and many of the Bay Area’s top musicians to bring their best work yet. The music is strong and the melodies catchy as they weave through relationship, spirituality, and the strong connection to each other they have in their music. Acoustic Rock, with alt-country pop is what folks describe as their style and brand. Take a listen and hear for yourself!
