"Dustcovers Review"

"...hints of the single-minded rhythm of recent Spoon albums, the anthemic quality of Joshua Tree-era U2, and the minor-key guitar figures of Big Star, sometimes all in the same song." - MadTracks - The Isthmus/Daily Page

"Show Preview"

So So Radio is hoping 2011 will be more than so so, and perhaps that in 2011, music writers will tire of making these stupid puns.

They are also hoping you will check them out on New Year's Eve, when they open the Hold Steady New Year's Eve concert at the Riverside Theater in Milwaukee, along with Jaill and headliners The Hold Steady.

So So Radio has plenty of reasons to celebrate, starting with the release of their debut LP this year, "Dust Covers.” If you are a fan of "Scrubs," you may have heard "Moenjodaro" during the show’s season 9 premiere.

Their "sincere, Midwestern rock and roll" have given Nick Hoffman, Ryan Garcia and Sam Arneson frequent airplay on local radio stations in Madison and Milwaukee, and enough buzz to propel them to open for more well-known acts like Ha Ha Tonka and Sleeping In the Aviary.

After ringing in the New Year, So So Radio plans to tour in he spring to support of their LP, and also hope to remaster “Dust Covers” and re-release it in vinyl. In the meantime, “Dust Covers” is available for download or as a CD. To learn more about So So Radio, please visit their very minimalist website: http://sosoradio.tumblr.com/

"Dustcovers Review/Show Preview"

"At the bottom of the bill of the massive Hold Steady New Year's Eve concert at The Riverside Theater is a tiny band you probably haven't heard of but whose giant sound could very well steal the show."

"The new record blends the straight forward power pop sounds of Big Star and Replacements with indie rock acts like Spoon and the Walkmen."

"...semi-polished timeless midwestern rock..."

"The Week[end]: January 8-10, 2010"

The band that claims to reside in "Nowhere in Particular, Wisconsin" makes Madison its home for the night, sharing a year's worth of indie-pop creations. These include "Moenjodaro," the So So Radio single that appeared recently on Scrubs and that's been turning heads via Amazon, iTunes and WORT. - The Isthmus - Madison

"Tonight on Local/Live: So So Radio"

Straightforward pop-rock is in the musical blood of Milwaukee’s So So Radio, who capably bring sincerity to their lyrics written around chiming guitars, ambling drums and rolling organs; simple but powerful songs with a Eef Barzelay (ClemSnide) frame of mind in terms of underdog championing and a bare bones in construction, but full in sound, pop layout. Wistfully-slid guitar chords and harmonica add an extra oomph of earnestness to the band’s songs that were handpicked to appear on television (Scrubs) and be a winning choice to prelude the iconic pop-punk band the Smoking Popes at Turner Hall (Friday, May 7). - SonicDiet

Bio

Born in the basement of a permanent vacation home on a too-shallow lake in rural Wisconsin, So So Radio delivers "timeless midwestern rock" (onmilwaukee.com) that blends "hints of the single-minded rhythm of recent Spoon albums, the anthemic quality of Joshua Tree-era U2, and the minor-key guitar figures of Big Star.” (Isthmus/Daily Page - Madison)

Having since graduated to the main floor of the house and to some of the midwest's finest stages, the band looks pretty no-frills: an electric guitar, a bass guitar, a small drumkit, a couple of voices, the occasional honk of a harmonica. Appearances aside, however, the music generated by this little band that can is detailed enough to demand repeated listens while maintaining a familiarity and accessibility that keeps one foot firmly planted in power pop's roots while the other kicks through the walls of convention.

Dustcovers, So So Radio's debut full-length and ultimately its swan song, showcases the dynamic range of the band's three-man lineup, with drummer Sam Arneson providing the relentless and driving backbeat reminiscent of mid-60s mod and brit-pop beneath which Nick Hoffmann's sometimes scattered but always melodic bass guitar pushes and pulls. Atop this foundation, principal songwriter Ryan Garcia weaves meandering guitar and vocal melodies that underscore his tales of hope, humanity, and nostalgia. Recorded mostly live and in relatively short order, Dustcovers comes over with an urgency and "structured looseness" that the band considers its on-stage signature, and it is apparent upon first listen that these guys genuinely love making music together.

Dustcovers represents the last in a string of accomplishments for So So Radio in its short existence. Between November of 2009 and March of 2011, the band independently recorded and released a well-received single (Moenjodaro b/w If We Don't), was featured on college-radio throughout Wisconsin, including an in-studio performance that was bootlegged and released as an EP (The Ponder EP), and finally self-produced their first and only LP, Dustcovers, at the legendary but since-shuttered Post-Historic Recording Studio. SSR opened for a diverse range of (inter)national acts (including The Hold Steady, Plants and Animals, The Greenhornes, Ha Ha Tonka, Smoking Popes), had their music featured on network TV ("Moenjodaro", featured in Season 9's premiere of ABC's "Scrubs") and received frequent play on independent radio stations in southeastern Wisconsin (among them 89.7 - WUWM in Milwaukee, 89.9 - WORT in Madison, 91.7 - WMSE in Milwaukee).
