"Hellbound For The Highway - CD Review"

"The Milwaukee-based four-piece Highway 414 arrives ready for the biker bar... A set of blues and boogie packed with slashing guitar and hard-hitting harmonica..." Tom Hyslop - Blues Revue Magazine - Blues Revue Magazine

"Hellbound For The Highway - CD Review"

Nothing screams evokes an emotion like some old school Rock/Blues. Anybody who calls themselves a fan of Rock can appreciate the roots, and no matter how much the musical scepter has evolved since the Blues, you can still find many great acts around the country that can strike a chord or two. Excited to find new bands all the time that can shed some southern action to kick back too on a casual sundays. Believe it or not Highway 414 are a group from Milwaukee, Wisconsin formed back in 2008. The boys are a tight bunch displaying traditional “high energy” blues with some modern nuances for instance old classics by artists such as Muddy Waters, Albert King and Howlin’ Wolf.
A crucial element of course is the harmonica which adds that grinding soul feeling to most of the songs, tracks like “All Fired Up” and “All Burning ‘ Up” shows this common trait the most. No slouch for the guitar, lead axeman Aaron Oliver dwelles into a roll thundering solo on “Ain’t That Like A Woman”. No doubt shades of Stevie Ray show in bight colors upon listening to “Sorry Sunday (Hangover Blues)” with a traditional slow-grinding blues classic fee. One of the highlights of this “Highway” trip is the song “Bungalow Boogie” a bluesy hard rock speed jam session with a little of funkiness for good measure.
Even if Blues Rock is your thing or just a casual classic rock fiend, you will find a record well done top to bottom, is not groundbreaking as the influences scream loudly but proud, but the classic blues trademark sound is performed on a high level and just a good fun cd to pop in your car and listen to on the highway or a road trip.

"Hellbound For The Highway - CD Review"

“With Paul Fecke on harmonica and vocals, S. Aaron Oliver on guitar, Dan Behrens on bass and Eric Sorenson on drums, we have a perfect combo that actually listens to one another, making music for those who still like to hear updated but not outdated blues-style rocking, loud music.”

"...it is clear Highway 414 are not some novelty blues act as they have put their heart and soul into the music... When all is said and done if you like the blues this is a no brainer."

Bio

Highway 414 (four, one, four) got its start when guitarist Saul Aaron Oliver decided to realize his dream of putting a band together. Although he had only played guitar for about ten years, his tenacity and love of music allowed him to surpass most of his contemporaries. After a long and sometimes frustrating process, he found drummer Eric Sorenson, another hard working, quick study, vocalist/harmonica player Paul Fecke, who was on hiatus after finishing a tour with another band and most recently, bass player Jon Matelski, a career musician who over the years has played a variety of funk, jazz, r&b and alt rock, as well as blues and classic rock.

Over thirty years separates the oldest from the youngest member in this band. The thing we all have in common, no matter how young or old, is we were all heavily influenced by the rock music of the 60's, 70's, 80's and beyond, from the early Stones and Yardbirds to Zeppelin, Cream, Allman Bros. ZZ Top, Stevie Ray, all the way to Guns & Roses and Kid Rock. The common thread that runs through all these various artists is the influence of the blues. The blues is the foundation for most all the music we grew up with and felt inspired by, so for us it is important to stay in touch with that foundation.

What sets this band apart is that we are not trying to sound like anyone else. We play what we like, the music that makes us feel good. It doesn't matter if we're performing a cover or one of several original songs, it comes from the soul, not from the head. We do not chase the latest pop sound. We grew up in working class homes, we play working class music for working class people.
