"Jake Chisholm “Diamond In A Coalmine”. Self / Sarah French 2013."

Since the first cd notes, Jake Chisholm’s music sounds totally honest. Jake includes an overwhelming amount of feelings and emotions in every song he plays, that easily go deep into listener’s hearts. The musical elements Chisholm brings to us come from rock and roll, a lot of blues and some soul too. His lyrics evoke vivid stories that talk about love and dreams. After having gained an valuable reputation as singer, guitarist and song writer in Toronto blues circuits, now Jake Chisholm presents a very inspired album, with a magical touch, guitar riffs and slide, backed by Chris Banks on bass and Sly Juhas on drums, with the special collaboration of Jay Danley on tambourine and maracas. With this album Jake Chisholm appears in the international market as a charismatic and able guitar master, as well as a remarkable singer with great communicative skills. VERY GOOD. - LA HORA DEL BLUES

"Jake Chisholm "Diamond In A Coalmine" (Canada)"

Jake Chisholm's newest release "Diamond In A Coalmine" is my first intro to this unique sounding Canadian Blues Rock Singer, Songwriter, and Guitarist, and I must say I am really enjoying his music.

Based in Toronto, Ontario, Jake Chisholm is one of that areas in demand session players, especially with the Jazz & Blues scene. He rapidly gained attention and popularity with Jake and the Blue Midnights, a band of which he was founder and leader, culminating into a self-titled release in 2000. That album, lead to them performing throughout the country at numerous Clubs and prominent Festivals. As a sideman, Chisholm has backed some of Toronto's best Blues based artists, which included Julian Fauth, Paul Reddick, Jerome Godboo, and Raoul and the Big Time, to name but a few. For "Diamond In A Coalmine", Jake Chisholm once again reprises his role as a dynamic frontman, offering up an album, described as, "generous with infectious hooks and gritty vocals".

"Diamond In A Coalmine" consists of 9 thoroughly entertaining Tracks, 7 of which are Originals, all written by Jake Chisholm, and 2 great Covers, "Traveling Riverside Blues" (Robert Johnson) and "You Better Run" (The Young Rascals). For the lineup on "Diamond In A Coalmine", Chisholm is joined with Chris Banks (Bass) and Sly Juhas (Drums/Percussion). Guest artist on this album featured Jay Danley on Tambourine and Maracas.

"Diamond In A Coalmine" opens with a great grinding riff, on "I'm Gonna To Let You Be", which pounds out throughout this exceptionally entertaining first Track, and leaves you with no doubt, that you are about to embark on a fun little journey, that is going to be loaded with Stunning Guitar Work, topped off with Superb Drums, Bass, and Vocals.

The next 3 Tracks up, "Lets Do It Again", "Traveling Riverside Blues", and "Don't Take It So Hard", had a nice RL Burnside feel to them, with "Traveling Riverside Blues", really bringing out a great Bluesy Twang.

Jake Chisholm's Vocals, which were absolutely great throughout, "Diamond In A Coalmine", shone their brightest, for me, on Tracks 6, 7, & 9 "You Better Run", "Diamond In A Coalmine" and "When Love Goes Wrong", and truly sealed the deal for me, that he is certainly one of the better Singers out there nowadays, on the Canadian Blues Rock scene.

All in all, I found "Diamond In A Coalmine" to be a thoroughly entertaining album, with second to none Guitar work and Singing from Jake Chisholm. I also found his sound to be very unique and quite refreshing.

"Diamond In A Coalmine" should gain Jake Chisholm, a nice assortment of accolades, as it is certainly one of the better Canadian Blues Rock releases for 2013 and one that will please a lot of fans of that genre.

"Jake Chisholm: Diamond In A Coalmine Review"

Diamond In A Coalmine is the debut full-length album from Canadian blues rocker Jake Chisholm. The album features nine tracks chock-full of riff driven blues rock. Chisholm has been an in demand session player in the Toronto blues/jazz scene and shows on Diamond In A Coalmine that he’s more than ready to take the helm of his own band.

“I’m Gonna Let You Be” kicks off the album and Chisholm’s alluring vocals bring the listener in right from the start. Chisholm’s guitar playing and vocals are going to draw some comparisons to Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys. While The Black Keys have moved toward a more polished and produced sound over the past few years, Chisholm captures a vibe similar to The Black Keys’ earlier work. Chisholm definitely has a knack for catchy hooks and great guitar riffs, especially on “Let’s Do It Again,” and “That’s All They Could See.” Diamond In A Coalmine also features two covers, Robert Johnson’s “Traveling Riverside Blues’” and The Young Rascals’ “You Better Run.”

On Diamond In A Coalmine, Jake Chisholm lets it be known there is a new star in the making on the blues rock scene. There are no tricks or fancy production on this album, Chisholm just delivers blues rock the way it was meant to be played, raw and dirty. Diamond In A Coalmine is a great start to what looks to be a very promising solo career for Jake Chisholm.

"Jake Chisholm's Blues Rock Debut"

Jake Chisholm: Diamond In A Coalmine
Jake Chisholm's Diamond In A Coalmine is a muscular, powerful blues beast. Deep, strong and tough, with hammering bass from Chris Banks and relentless drums from Sly Juhas this is an album bending under the extreme gravity of heavy rock blues. There is a seriousness and an overwhelming presence of intensity to his music that leaves you no choice but to stop whatever you are doing and pay attention.
From his Toronto base, Jake Chisholm has played clubs and festivals from coast to coast and, though this is a debut album, it shows a mature artist with a fully developed sense of self and style. Really, it sounds like the guy popped out of the womb and landed on the stage, guitar in hand halfway through a song.
This guy is the real deal, he's the whole package. That's the real take-away here. This album stands tall next to the best of the best, and if you've been longing for a musical six-course musical meal after a maintenance diet of fast food small bites, Diamond In A Coalmine with leave you stuffed and satisfied. It's beefy, brawny and dense.
Diamond In A Coalmine debuts an artist that takes his work seriously, but not at the cost of enjoying the music. United with two spot-on co-horts, together they have made one of the most notable blues rock albums in recent memory. Fresh and familiar at the same time, with an inimitable heavy sound, Jake Chisholm is now officially no longer the student, he is the master. Very Highly Recommended.

Bio

There is sincerity in Jake Chisholm's music that is immediately identifiable. Whether his compelling vocal, his memorable guitar hooks, or his thoughtful lyrics ; he excels in all areas, providing the listener with the feelings of both familiarity and being privy to something cutting edge ; both at once. No fancy bells and whistles here, just a deep and full sound that is a fresh take on blues and adding rock 'n' roll elements. Inspired by classic blues, soul and rock n roll, Chisholm’s tasteful yet intricate guitar work and songwriting evokes vivid and shameless tales of love, lust, and lessons learned.

An in demand session player on the Toronto jazz & blues scene, Chisholm earned a reputation as a talented and respected young vocalist/guitar player. Chisholm is the founder and leader of the popular blues band Jake and the Blue Midnights, who rapidly and deservedly gained the attention of Canada’s blues scene, performing at numerous club gigs and notable festivals around the country. This lead to a busy sideman stint backing many Toronto based blues artists including Julian Fauth, Paul Reddick, Raoul and the Big Time, and Jerome Godboo.

Reprising his role as a dynamic front man, Chisholm breaks out of blues convention with his new CD Diamond In A Coalmine. Featuring seven originals and two creative cover songs (Robert Johnson’s “Traveling Riverside Blues” and The Young Rascals’ “You Better Run”), each track on the CD is generous with infectious guitar hooks and gritty vocals from Chisholm, fat bass lines from Chris Banks, and heavy pulsing grooves from drummer Sly Juhas. Jay Danley provides additional support with the tambourine and maracas.

With his thoughtful, creative and powerful interpretation of the blues, Diamond In A Coalmine is a testament to Jake Chisholm’s skills as an exceptional songwriter, masterful guitar player and charismatic front man, while also paying homage to his musical influences.
