"Introducing Derek Joe"

Let me introduce you all to the acoustic sound of Derek Joe. A friend recommended that I check out his music and I became a fan after listening to his track ‘Walking on the Moon’ which reminded me a little of Jason Mraz. If you were to ask me what is it about his music that made me a fan my answer would be simple, it is his vocal style. Derek has this honest soulful tone that is as relaxing as his music, but still has the ability to stand out and grab your attention.

I want to let Joe tell you more about himself as I got the opportunity to ask him a few questions about music, his goals and his future plans. This is what he had to say:

Can you remember the moment when you wanted to become a musician?

Yea, I remember hearing “Interstate love song” by STP. I became consumed with learning the guitar intro to that song. I practiced it all night. After that, I just started learning other songs and eventually just started writing my own. I also have to credit my older brother who has been a huge influence and is also also a Songwriter and former bass player of the Popular San Diego band “Agent 51″

How would you describe your sound to any new listeners and who are your influences?

It’s kinda of hard to categorize my sound but if I had to I would say its is kind of a blend of Jazz/Folk/Soul. I have a pretty eclectic taste when it comes to music and enjoy anything that is good. I have to say though that when I first heard a Stevie wonder record it change my perspective on music forever. I loved everything about it! He is the one Artist that I would say I admire the most.

How do you approach writing a new song and what inspires you to write?

It depends, sometimes I will just hear a cool word or line and start singing a melody of it and later put guitar to the melody. Other times I will just sit down with my guitar and say “Ok I’m going to write a song know” a technique which doesn’t always deliver the best results. Nonetheless, whatever it may be I just enjoy the process of attempting to build something from scratch.

Which is your favourite track that you have wrote and why?

I really like the production work on “Sketching Signals” and “Waiting on the moon” but in my opinion my best material has yet to be recorded. So keep an eye out for some new music this year.

Is there anyone you’d like to write a song with, or collaborate with?

There are so many Artists I would love to work with. I think Pharrell is a great Songwriter and Producer and I really like the stuff that Ed Sherran is doing these days. The best music in my opinion though comes from just having fun and jamming with friends, than organizing that into a song. I think collaborating has to do more with flexibility and communication rather than how great you may be.

If the end of the world was near and you had enough time to listen to one album, which would you choose?

That’s a tough one, probably something that would calm me down, just instrumentals. Maybe a Miles Davis record?

Do you have any musical related goals that you want to accomplish?

A short term goal of mine is to record a full length Album. It’s tough getting into a quality recording studio unless you are ready to drop some serious cash, but other indie artists are doing it so it is possible. I also would love to play National Music Festivals such as “The Hangout” or “Wakarusa”.

What’s the future plans for your music ?

Just to keep working on my craft and recording new quality music. I plan on promoting my Ep by playing a lot of shows and maybe setting up a small California Tour. It would also be great to eventually license some songs for Indie Films and maybe Television.

If you visit Reverbnation.com/DerekJoeMusic you will get the opportunity to listen to some great songs which include my stand out tracks ‘Eye for an Eye’ and ‘Waiting on the Moon’. Some of the tracks available include some demo’s songs which may sound a little rough around the edges but his natural song writing ability is clear to hear. When you listen to each song it is the wonderful combination of Derek’s vocals and gentle guitar style that always grabs my attention. My favourite song is called ‘Sketching Signal’ which features my favourite vocals from Derek and also demonstrates his great lyrical talent.

You can keep up to date with the musical journey of Derek Joe by visiting him on his social media pages at Facebook and Twitter. You will also get updates about new music and future gigs on there or at his Reverbnation site too.

I can’t wait to hear the new EP from Derek Joe and you can expect it to be featured on here in the future. If the tracks I’ve heard so far are an indication of what to expect, we’ll get a great collection of songs that will grab a lot of people’s attention. - My Random Juke box
