Biography
Alex White currently lives in Columbus, Ohio where as a child he was raised on a vast assortment of musical inputs ranging from pop to folk music. Performing is something that has always come natural to White who has performed regularly in choirs, on the stage and television since his youth. “Performing has always been something that I have enjoyed, I like knowing I can entertain people and make them feel good.”
Before returning to the dorms one Fall weekend his sophomore year of college, White decided to pack his Mother’s classical guitar. “There were so many things going on in my life at that time. I was writing verse after verse to these melodies playing in my head. I wasn’t sure what I was going to do with the guitar, but I knew something was going to come out.”
Teaching himself to play by ear and learning from TAB’s he’d picked up off line, Alex was playing open mics and for friends at parties by the end of the school year. At the end of his third year, without any academic motivation, White decided to leave school and head over seas in search of “himself.”
After a two year stint of traveling around the world, graduating college and then moving back to Australia for awhile, “Kid” returned home in March 2007 with a new sense of self and a clear vision of his desired direction in the world of music. Writing nearly 2 full length albums while away, White was armed with the necessary tools to start performing and recording. “It never gets old, every song has it’s own life, it’s own beat; and it’s my duty to bring each piece to life. The challenge is bringing that feeling to life through a recording”
To date, White has recorded and produced three LP’s all of which have been release spanning from 2006-2008. Under the band name “Alex White & Friends” which mainly consists of Bass player Billy Zenhal and Lead Guitarist Matthew Simpkins, the group is currently working on their first full length EP with an expected date of completion sometime early in 2010. With additional musical sounds from some of Columbus’s finest musicians, White hopes to break down some of the genre barriers that attempt to pigeon hole his distinct sound. Recently featured in Columbus Alive! he is described as:
“A laid-back blend of hip-hop, folk and pop that puts him in close company with the likes of Ben Harper, Jack Johnson and Jason Mraz. He sings, raps, scats and beat-boxes atop “groove oriented” story songs built around his acoustic guitar.” (Chris DeVille, Columbus Dispatch’s Alive!)
