Artist Information Biography Winner of the 2010 South Sound Blues Association’s Back to Beale Street Contest As the winner of this year’s South Sound Blues Association’s Back to Beale Street solo/duo competition, JD will be competing in Memphis this January at the 2010 International Blues Challenge. The judges had the following feedback about his performance: Alice Stuart – “JD’s vocal quality matches some of the old masters from the Delta.” Dean Jacobsen – “JD will do well in Memphis. On stage he is confident and comfortable with fans.” Tommy Carson – “JD’s voice is unique with good range. He feels what he plays: His spirit is in his singing/playing, much like his inspirations. He is extremely talented.” What drew JD Hobson to old-style blues and Americana? It started with a father who came to the Northwest from Virginia with a passion for the blues. JD’s exposure started early and the music was on the radio every night. The depth and meaning of these traditional musical styles is engrained in his DNA. Later, contemporary artists such as Scott H. Biram, Kelly Joe Phelps, and Neko Case sealed the deal. JD’s take on these traditional forms is anything but stagnant or mundane. While honoring the history of the music, he brings new breath and energy to the genre. Whether it be his rockin’ version of Son House’s “Preachin’ the Blues” or his Barrelhouse-inspired original “Driven,” his music brings ‘em to their feet and leaves ‘em with a good-time feeling. Performing at venues throughout the Puget Sound area, Oregon and California, JD Hobson has continued to impress audiences with his skillful guitar playing and haunting, passionate vocals.
