Biography
Sisters Ruby and Summer Spiro grew up surfing across the street from their beach home in San Diego, California. “We both love to surf. Surfing is a huge part of our everyday life, along with music.” The sand, sun, and healing power of the ocean inspired the girls’ beachy, harmonious sound, and is an integral part of every song they write. The young musical prodigies have been singing and writing music since early childhood along with their dad, and their sound has been inspired by Joni Mitchell, the Dixie Chicks, Cheryl Crow, and even the Beach Boys. Their musical roots run deep, as mom Leslie used to perform with England Dan and John Ford Coley, dad Mark has collaborated with artists as diverse as Julian Lennon and Heart, and their granddad was one of Ella Fitzgerald's original drummers.
The girls' music inspires a vibe reminiscent of the sixties and seventies, when women writers such as Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon wrote their songs from organic experience rather than the prewritten formulas that have characterized the pop charts in recent years. The sisters were signed by indie label Flyer Records (Alpha Rev), and were recently featured on Women of Substance Radio. Early reviews, as well as coverage in “Teen Vogue” and “W” Magazine, have everyone buzzing about the sisters’ down to earth beauty and incredible sound.
After weathering their dad’s recent bout with cancer, and their decision to not define their sound as strictly country, the sisters now believe things happen for a reason. “Music was one of the things that helped us get through some of those times. We love the way good music and lyrics can change the way we feel, and we hope to empower and enlighten people with our words.” Listening to the girls perform does just that, along with that feeling of the sheer joy of just hanging at the beach with a few best friends.
