Biography
Pedro Moutinho was born on the 11th November 1976, in Oeiras, in a family of fado lovers.
He grew up listening to and socializing with some of the most important names of this musical genre, that initiated him in their art.
At the age at 11 he would already sing it informally, and no wonder that he later choose fado to be his personal form of musical expression. Since his seventeen’s he has been part of the cast of some of the most high-status fado houses in Lisbon.
In 2003 he records, for Som Livre, his debut album, “Primeiro Fado” (“First Fado”) that obtained attention and applause from specialized reviewers.
This album mixes traditional fados with orchestrated ones, and also Portuguese folk themes arranged in fado style. Some of the leading Portuguese composers gave their collaboration to this record that includes also a song from Brazilian composers Caetano Veloso and Jorge Mautner.
Thanks to this album, Pedro Moutinho got the "Newcomer Award 2003" by the "Press House", and was invited by famous fado singer Carlos do Carmo to take part in his commemorative album “Novo Homem na Cidade”, released in 2004. From then on, Moutinho won the right to a merited place in several fado compilation albums.
During 2006 is published Pedro Moutinho’s 2nd CD – “ENCONTRO” (“Meeting” in English). “ENCONTRO” is exactly what its title suggests: a meeting between classical Fado tunes and new lyrics of contemporary Portuguese writers and poets. Is the respect for the traditions mixed with innovation. Is a step into the feelings and approaches of a new generation of Fado singers – the ones that are designing the New Fado Era.
Pedro Moutinho knows that the respect for the traditions and the accuracy of the act is what makes possible the changes to come and something new to happen. This is the way Pedro Moutinho has chosen for “ENCONTRO” and for his acts. The result of this way of feeling and singing the fado, is shown in his participation in 2007 in the acclaimed spanish film director CARLOS SAURA's most recent work: “FADOS, by Carlos Saura”. He is one of the faces of New Fado singers and players, the ones that play the closing scene of “FADOS, by Carlos Saura”.
In 2008 Pedro Moutinho's CD "ENCONTRO" is awardeD with the "AMALIA RODRIGUES PRIZE for BEST FADO ALBUM". This award is the ultimate recognition of talent in Fado, and only achieved by great artists and singers.
In April 2009 has just been released the new CD "UM COPO DE SOL" from a creative and mature process that took about 3 years, and where the songs and melodies are all about a new vision of feelings in the 21st century.
Pedro Moutinho’s career proves that talent is not a gift with which one is born and lasts forever the same, but something that an artist needs to cherish and nourish, through a demanding apprenticeship.
