Biography
Impact Press called Daniel Hales’ lyrics: “...nothing short of brilliant.”  April Boyle wrote in Northeast Performer: “Hales artfully plays with the duality of words in the English language, creating lyrics that are both smart and memorable.” Dan Oppenheimer of The Valley Advocate described his music as “...eccentric, cerebral and eerily beautiful,” and said of his album eau de ambiguity “...if Beck had more of an apocalyptic bent, he might produce a record that sounds something like this.”  Indeed, people have written and said many nice things about Daniel and his music, for which he thanks them.  Whether fronting the bands SHArQ (1998 – 2003), The Ambiguities (2003 – the present) or performing solo, Daniel always brings a unique sensibility, a few strangely tuned guitars, effects pedals, and an eclectic batch of songs with him when he plays out.

Daniel released the 5 song ep, "Bridges Freeze First"in July 2008.  This ep served as the appetizer for the full 14 song entree, "Frost Heaves," which was released April 4, 2009.  The music blog, "It's Not The Band I Hate, It's Their Fans, " wrote of Frost Heaves, "With each listen, the album grows more and more reflective, striking a perfect balance between moments of quiet meditation and tripped out mind expansion..."

"Frost Heaves" is a project that was in the works for many years. Daniel collaborated with a wide array of talented musicians (including Mike Levesque, who has drummed for David Bowie) and bassist Kurt Fedora (Dinosaur Jr.) and producer Norm Demoura (NRBQ) to craft a dense, textural album that’s tough to pigeonhole: a mix of indy rock, folk, electronic, Americana, psychedelic raga pop, and renegade country.  Frost Heaves is a pleasing hybrid of many genres and influences with gorgeous harmonies, unique instrumentation, and lyrics that don't suck.
