Biography
Mattias is a seeker, looking for meaning in life and a musician who believes in the healing forces of music. A force which he finds strongest in the creative process of writing music. “The music has always been a great part of my life, it’s deeply shaped by my own experiences, especially when it comes down to my songwriting” Lies says as he continues: “I like to believe that music is an universal language, I like to see music as a great wall of reflection, which makes life more understandable. Music is my drug, my sounding essence of life”.
Mattias Lies grew up in Falun, a small town in Sweden and he’s got both Swedish, Finnish and Norwegian blood running through his veins. At fifteen he started playing acoustic guitar and in a short period of time he was singing and writing his very own songs. During the following years he’s been currently writing songs, playing in various bands and touring around the country of Sweden. He finally had his official record release in 2006 through the independent distribution company ISMA (International Swedish Music Agency) with his self-titled debut album, a crossover encompassing different kinds of styles including world music, pop, rock and jazz. The debut of Lies got a lot of attention among the Swedish radio channels, including televisions appearances.
The second album of Mattias Lies “Messages” was official released at the 24:th of October 2009. “Messages” contains twelve new songs with twelve different messages and each one of them are dedicated to people whom Lies got in touch with along his very own way of life.
While Lies was working at the House of Folk Music in Rättvik, Sweden, he got inspired by some old interviews, made in the late 1960’s. The informants were old people born in the late 20th century. Lies found similarity between the informants and the modern man in the way that we’re reflecting our lives. “I mean from one time to another the most of us are walking through times of despair and for me it was fascinating hearing someone in the past, that actually was sharing my own points of view”, Lies says. Lies who was in the middle of a songwriting phase got a lot of inspiration through his work with these interviews. In the lyrics of “Messages” Lies are reflecting fortune, a changing world and a changing state of mind. The album is inspired by the fortune of mankind, his own as well as others.
The red thread are shining through in the lyrics of Lies even if he’s been changing language from Swedish to English. On the up-follower he is still mixing different styles of rock and pop music with folk music together, just like he did on his debut. You may not recognize Lies at first if you compare the two albums, but on the other hand, the unpredictable use to live longer than the predictable.
