Biography
Voice box has a core, and revolving doors. The music is derivative of your dreams. The good dreams you don’t remember. They lean towards the cinematic and the light of the dark. They share the same mission statement as Dante Alighieri in his Comedy. Voice box has performed in Chicago as a sextet featuring: Bruce Fournier-words, music, percussion; Valerie Dillon- lead voice; JD Kostyk- guitars; John Chavers- bass guitar; Paul Sigurdson- drums; Jesse Scinto- saxophone, in support of their first disc, Instant Gratification. From the original recording’s ambient, cyber-beatnik vibe, the songs, in the able hands of the band, open up a new dynamic improvisation and kinetic energy. The Din Room CD was recorded as Voice box morphed into a four piece. The Lyrics are androgynous, literary, unbridled to the hilt; the music heavy and atmospheric. John and Paul, come to the fore. Bruce smacks of and eclipses Valerie. JD takes to soaring. The results in tracks like Al and Paco, Injection, and Paradia give witness to the power surge. This mélange of melody, sound, and drive was recorded and mixed in two days time.
And so to the core and revolving doors.
Between the fall of 2008 and the Spring of 2009, Voice box sculpted what is to be its third release: At the Speed of Ten Machines. Bruce and JD joined with Bob Berg on Drums, Jim Quinn on percussion and Brent Mix on Bass. With this cast, the band leans towards the more intricate, textural, funky, and vocal savvy, and mixes more aggression with mellow melodics. The summer of 2009 saw many a day in the recording studio, some great shows, and yet another change of faces. Look for the future sound of the band to be even more powerful, dynamic, grooving, and experimental with Del Hooks behind the drums and Nic Cole-Klaes on the bass guitar. Landscapes, and the people who inhabit them. Sublime and desolate songs which you desperately need to hear. This is Voice box.
