Biography Modern Roots Reggae artist/producer Zion Judah returns to the rapidly evolving music scene after a three year hiatus and hits the ground running with his unique and eclectic concoction of roots reggae, new age and contemporary flavored musical ingredients. He is also poised to release his sophomore EP/album tentatively titled ”Quest” soon, on his grassroots, indie label - Mt. Zion Records. ZJ's previous album - “Divine Creation” released in 2004, was a fine freshman effort, and was promoted almost exclusively via the Internet and gained him substantial worldwide exposure. The album is still one of the top ten requested albums on RadiodirectX of Toronto, Canada, to date. One might add that a Google search for Zion Judah nets pages of relevant results in double digits! Try it for yourself. For those just becoming familiar with this talented, yet sub-radar indie artist, who has been writing, producing and performing since the late nineties, ZJ is an original sounding, at times difficult to categorize, self-contained artist whose sound has been rightfully described as deep, innovative and Bob Marleyesque," - An'R Magazine. His distinct vocal delivery and savvy parlance ranges from a Bob Marley meets Ziggy Marley, meets Jamiroquai meets Sananda Maitreya (fka. Terence Trent D'Arby), meets Steel Pulse meets The Police/Sting synthesis, to grittier, Super Cat/Jr. Gong-like chanting with tempered intensity when the mood requires it. Inherent in his style is an infectiously pervasive, utopian vibe that abounds with incisive lyrics, clever phraseology and poignant themes, many of which allude to the transformational shift in consciousness and the commensurate transition of the ages that are well underway on planet Earth aka Gaia. Zion Judah (b. Angelo Damian Singh) bears a multi-ethnic, West Indian background, and hails from the twin island republic of Trinidad & Tobago. He is a self-taught musician who grew up listening to anything that sounded good and moved him - roots reggae, dancehall, kaiso/soca, blues, jazz, funk, Rnb, hip-hop, rock, folk, pop, classical, African drumming, East Indian music and many other Indigenous styles. He was also a music video junkie since the early eighties, but in his parents' opinion, which was law, music was a pipe dream, and thus not encouraged in any serious way, but that didn't deter him. By age nineteen he flew the coop and headed for the US to explore his potentially diverse path. “Zee”, as he is called by friends in Shaolin (i.e. Staten Island, NY, for those not in the know) isn't your average, garden variety, creative cat. Besides writing and producing all of his own material, he is an avid reader, and has navigated a wide occupational spectrum, ranging from handyman, house painter, Home Depot bookkeeper, Chase bank teller, substitute teacher, to commodities trading assistant at the NY Board of Trade's former World Trade Center location, and not necessarily in that order, all the while staying on his musical grind. He took a short break from music in late 2006 to remedy his "College Drop-out" status, and graduated Summa Cum Laude from The City University of New York with a BSc. in Economics/Business and a minor in Geography, and is now pursuing a Master's degree in Environmental Policy part-time. “One ought to develop both the left and right brain...engage one's full potential...if one is to to realize one's whole purpose,” he says with quiet confidence. Since 1992 he has called NYC home away from home, and when he isn't making music, he's either spending quality time with his family, studying, or absorbing lots of underground content in order to stay sharp, meanwhile working diligently at being a better human being.
