Biography
Wilhelm Pfeiffer wurde 1958 in Wien geboren und wuchs in einer von klassischer Musik geprägten Umgebung auf. Die Art jedoch wie ihm diese Musik nahegebracht wurde, bzw. die Aussicht auf einen konventionellen Musikunterricht schreckten ihn ab.
Erst mit sechzehn Jahren entdeckte Wilhelm Pfeiffer die Liebe zur Musik und zum Gesang, speziell zum Operngesang. Zunächst galt sein Hauptinteresse den Werken Richard Wagners und dem "Italienischen Verismo" (Umberto Giordano, Ruggero Leoncavallo, Pietro Masgacni, Giacomo Puccini), später entdeckte er auch die Lied- und Balladenliteratur von Carl Loewe, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann und Hugo Wolf.
In der Folge brachte er sich die Grundlagen der Musiktheorie, das Klavierspielen sowie Stimm- und Gesangstechniken autodidaktisch(!) bei. Anregung und Orientierung waren für Wilhelm Pfeiffer dabei der Stil und die Technik von Sängerpersönlichkeiten wie Theo Adam, Giovanni Martinelli, Birgit Nilsson, Spas Wenkoff und Wolfgang Windgassen. Sie wurden gewissermaßen seine Lehrer und das in einem künstlerisch sehr umfassenden Sinne.
Sein beruflicher Lebensweg führte Wilhelm Pfeiffer nach Abschluss einer kaufmännischen Ausbildung und verschiedenen einschlägigen Tätigkeiten schließlich 1996 zum Beruf des Energethikers (Bach-Blütentherapie, Klangmeditation, Musiktherapie), in welchen er seine Erfahrungen bezüglich Stimme und Gesang einfließen lassen konnte.
Seit 2002 widmet sich Wilhelm Pfeiffer in erster Linie der Musik und dem Gesang. Seinem Debut als Konzertsänger im November 2005 (BALLADENABEND – Gesellschaft für Musiktheater, Wien – siehe "Photos") folgten regelmäßige, erfolgreiche Konzertauftritte mit Lieder- und Balladenabenden sowie anspruchsvollen Opern- und Oratorienkonzerten im In- und Ausland; des weiteren ab Herbst 2007 diverse CD-Einspielungen (Klassische Balladen, Haydn-Lieder, Winterreise etc.). Im Lauf des Jahres 2009 hat Wilhelm Pfeiffer, aus gegebenem Anlass (Haydn-Jahr), bei seinen Konzerten einen ausgeprägten Schwerpunkt auf das Oratorien-, vor allem aber auch auf das Lied-Repertoire des Joseph Haydn gelegt.
Gelegentlich ist Wilhelm Pfeiffer auch publizistisch tätig (siehe seine Abhandlung über die Rolle des Paul aus der Oper DIE TOTE STADT von E. W. Korngold auf www.korngold-society.org/paul.html). Voraussichtlich im Herbst 2010 erscheint sein Buch über WINTERREISE, den berühmten Liederzyklus von Franz Schubert (WINTERREISE – Vollendetes Meisterwerk und Meisterwerk des Aufbruchs).

Wilhelm Pfeiffer was born in Vienna in 1958 and grew up in a family context characterised by Classical music. However, the way how this music was pitched to him and the prospect of receiving typical traditional music education put him off.
It was only at the age of sixteen when Wilhelm Pfeiffer discovered his love for music and singing, particularly opera roles. First, he was drawn to Richard Wagner’s works and "Italian Verismo" (Umberto Giordano, Ruggero Leoncavallo, Pietro Masgacni, Giacomo Puccini), later, he would also discover the art song and ballad literature of Carl Loewe, Franz Schubert, Robert Schumann and Hugo Wolf.
This led to Wilhelm Pfeiffer self-educating(!) himself in music theory, playing the piano, singing and voice training. Vocalist personalities like Theo Adam, Giovanni Martinelli, Birgit Nilsson, Spas Wenkoff and Wolfgang Windgassen and their styles and techniques were to be the source of inspiration and orientation for him. From the artistic point of view, they would, in a way, become his teachers in a highly inclusive sense.
After completing education in business administration and subsequent positions, in 1996 Wilhelm Pfeiffer's career eventually culminated in his activities as energethician (Bach Flower Therapy, sound meditation, music therapy), where he would also fall back on his experience with singing and voice training.
Since 2002, Wilhelm Pfeiffer has predominantely been focusing on making music and singing. He premiered as vocalist in November 2005 (BALLAD RECITAL – Gesellschaft für Musiktheater, Vienna – see "Photos"). Intense and successful performance activity was to follow with art song and ballad recitals and demanding opera and oratorio concerts at home and abroad; additonally, activities as recording artist comprise a string of album recordings since autumn 2007 (Klassische Balladen/Classical Ballads, Art Songs by Haydn art, Winterreise etc). Drawn against the background of the Haydn anniversary, the year 2009 saw Wilhelm Pfeiffer put a strong focus on Joseph Haydn’s oratories and art song repertory with his performances.
Every now and then, Wilhelm Pfeiffer engages in publishing articles (see his essay on the role of Paul from the opera DIE TOTE STADT by E. W. Korngold on www.korngold-society.org/paul.html). His book on the world-famous song cycle WINTERREISE by Franz Schubert (WINTERREISE – Distinctive masterpiece and masterpiece of a new era) is expected to be published in autumn 2010.
