Electronic beats and sampled instruments are arranged and serve as the backbone for the music.  Live musicians are then brought in to improvise on top.  Think, "singer/songwriter-hippie-folk music" meets down-tempo electronica (trip-hop/r&b/hip-hop) meets improvisational jazz.
