HoneyBaked

Honeybaked, a jazz/funk fusion band, played at The First Annual Magic City Brewfest on Saturday June 2nd. Their unique sound has captured the ears of local listeners, building them a strong fan base in their home town. Their music consists of complex jazz oriented chord structures, anything but average time signatures, and melodies influenced by anything from traditional Arabian melodic passages to west cost American jazz.

Honeybaked performed a great show that got more kids dancing than any other opener we have ever had at one of our events here at BSC. They brought their brand of great soul-funk grooves to the boiling point despite a short set time limit. The band has a large following of loyal BSC students that see them anytime they play around town. Having them open for Better Than Ezra on our biggest event Southern Comfort was a great thrill for those of us who used to watch Jaime and the boys play on campus in the basement of the fraternity houses. Bringing the dirtiest funk around, Honeybaked is the best local band to come out of Birmingham in years.

"As the highly anticipated event
approached, I tried to become less distraught about what lay before me. Though Better Than Ezra had played at BSC before, I was reassured by countless students that they gave a good concert. Though I had never heard of Kevin Kinney, much like many BSC students had not heard of The Fray before they played on campus, I was willing to hold on passing
judgment. Finally, I knew that
Honeybaked would put on a great show, having seen them on campus twice and around town several other times. Then Friday arrived. After a nice dinner and a few games of pool, I found myself meandering down to the marvelous venue,
also known as the wedding tent in a tennis court/parking lot. While I did not arrive in time to see all of Kinney's set, I did hear the end of it, along with numerous complaints
by the retreating crowd. Then came Corey Smith. I had heard of Smith before, and I knew he had somewhat of a cult following. I, however, was not a part of that, nor were most of people I was surrounded by that night. As far as the booking of Corey Smith, I think that Quest II would have done better to pay every student five dollars. This could have been used for the cover charge to see him downtown for those who so desired. He plays there every month. And for those who don't so desire, the five dollar could cover a late-night Wendy's run. It was now up to Saturday to save the entire weekend for me. Honeybaked, as
usual, was great. While their set was not incredibly long, they filled up every minute of it with the same quality jam music we have come to know them for. Similarly, Better Than Ezra performed a great, but short, set."

Honeybaked is a hot new group of young contemporary jazz heads who are not afraid to let it all hang out while playing music that is both fun and challenging! The combination of their youthful zeal and formidable talent makes them a true standout among bands who are trying to play instrumental music at a high level. They will no doubt succeed at raising the bar very high for everybody else who attempts this kind of music with their sophisticated song selection and superior musicianship!

The members of Birmingham band HoneyBaked are all classically trained - but these days their main focus is fusion. Their sound incorporates everything from jazz-blues to funk-rock, always with an improvisational flare. This is "Don't Let the Tail Wag the Dog", performed live at WorkPlay for their demo CD.
