Kevin Watson is a young man.
And yet, he is a distinctive voice, a rising star/songwriter in the world of that psychedelic music sometimes known as nugrass/jam.
"Kevin is always melodically interesting, innovative and engaging," says Bridget Law, fiddler for 'Elephant Revival'. He has a wonderful stage presence. It is always fun and exciting to jam with him. I have never been disappointed about where the jam involving Kevin has gone," she said.
"As a song-writer Kevin can have this beautiful young man's voice, posture. He can have this humbleness, this earnestness in his seeking, in his knocking on the door of experience, in his meeting up with mysteries, the mystery of the other, the mystery of women, the mystery of love," says Daniel Rodriguez guitarist for 'Elephant Revival.
Watson has opened for 'Elephant Revival' and played on stage with the band. He is a friend and musical associate of the musicians who were the 'String Cheese Incident'. And he is active in the Yarmonygrass Music Festival which occurs in August at the Copper Mountain Ski Resort in Colorado.
"Kevin's joy in the music is beautiful and contagious," said Daniel Rose, stand-up base player for 'Elephant Revival'. "After the scheduled performances at a music festival, Kevin is always an important force in making the late night/early morning jam happen. Born and raisd in Oklahoma City, Kevin Watson is a songwriter whose diverse, open-minded nature shines through his songs in more ways than one. Like a kid in a genre candy store, his songs feature all kinds of flavors from folk and bluegrass to reggae and funk. Likewise, his conscious lyrics explore many different aspects of the human condition ranging from breaking through social conventions and expectations to the celebration of the lives of loved ones who have died. Regardless of style or content, though, it’s his positive vibes and soulful delivery on stage that are quickly building his fan base wherever he plays.
Since he began performing in local bars in Tulsa, OK in 2002, Kevin has performed mostly as a solo artist, utilizing his captivating vocals to draw crowds in. Since 2007, however, he has branched out through different forms of collaboration, most frequently hosting "Kevin Watson & Friends" sessions. These shows feature a variety of talented musicians, many of which haven't rehearsed or even heard the songs they are playing on, leading to momentus improvisation and exploration of Kevin's material.
The most recent and exciting collaboration, however, is "Kevin Watson's Air Loom", his first full on band project. Backed by a talented cast of jazz based musicians, Kevin's acoustic songwriter style gets quickly whipped into a world of improv where no song is the same from night to night!
In his short career Kevin has had the honor and pleasure of performing with many amazing musicians including members of The String Cheese Incident, Railroad Earth, Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey, Hot Buttered Rum, Honkytonk Homeslice, Elephant Revival, My-Tea Kind, Head for the Hills, Jesse Aycock, Big Water, The Wayword Sons, Galapagos, Mama Sweet, Tech Tonic, The Hillbenders and more!
