THE PHOENIX EXCERPT FROM AN ARTICLE ENTITLED:

AFTER HOURS
The rising pulse of Boston’s house-music beat
By MICHAEL FREEDBERG
January 17, 2007 1:12:20 PM

The fans are doing house even as they try to figure it all out. That’s part of the excitement. Just what is this stuff? House DJ Eddie Amador says it just right: “House music . . . it’s a body thing; a spiritual thing; a soul thing!” And what is it about house that makes it a body, spiritual, and soul thing? House is made by producers using electronic instruments and mixboards, and by singers in the electronic environment; it’s brought to the fans by DJs who mix tracks improvisationally. The DJ stands in his booth (and it usually is a he, despite the presence of DJ Kares here in Boston and a few rising stars elsewhere), out of sight, mostly; the producers and singers remain out of view. There is no chance for fan and performer to meet eye to eye, as happens in rock. Instead, the connection is a conceptual one first, and second it’s between the music’s soul and spirit and the dancer’s soul, spirit, and body. Concept is central to house’s depth and to its transcendence of the moment. All of which has grown stronger and stronger during the 21 years since its first hit, Chip E & K.Joy’s “Like This.” - Michael Freedberg

"JJazproJect Magazine Review of "Lover's Dance" EP"

Lover's Dance(K.Joy)-Review.

K Joy - Lover’s Dance [Cyberjamz]

With a captivating voice and a nagging groove this is a track that’s hard to get out of your head once you’ve heard it. The production is impeccable and the vocals enticing whether they are spoken or sung as K Joy invites you to a lover’s dance. How can you refuse?

Soul Oasis presents K. Joy "Like this" (CyberJamz Records CD Promo)

The older one amongst us will surely remember the 1985 house classic "Like this" by Kimberly J. Salter aka K. Joy, back then produced by the legendary Chip E. (if you don't know this classic track yet, check the 'Original 1985 Remix' which is included in this package to experience a real timeless underground house classic). Now, over 20 years later, this track return in the form of these fresh remixes. First we see Peter 'CWB' Mooka teaming up with K. Joy for the 'Deep House Mix', a deeper than deep interpretation featuring marvelous chords that give it an old school touch. Next is Chazz who gives the track a tougher edge on his 'South African Mix', while the 'I wanna see you freak Nwk, NJ Mix' by the team of Cassioware, Chip E. and the O.G.'s features additional vocals by Cassioware and is a slammin' piece of raw underground house with a dirty edge. Closing the package is DJ Kemit's 'ATL Club Mix', a smooth percussion enriched, funk soaked reworking featuring lovely keys and chords.

"Independent DJ Review of "Like This" EP taken from Deep House Page"

Once again the illustrious K. Joy has released 5 mixes of an all time classic chart stopper "Like This" on the renowned Cyberjamz label. Each mix is unique and has the the flavor to delight the dancers feet. My favorites are LIKE THIS (S. AFR MIX) FEAT CHAZZ and Wanna See You Freak NWK (NJ Mix Cassioware, Chip E & The O. Gs).

Sammy you and K.Joy have a special chemistry on this project, I'm sure it will be a winner for the team.

"JJazproJect Magazine Review of "Like This" EP"

“Like This” is a high quality female vocal number with a variety of mixes to suit most tastes. From the aptly named “Deep House Mix” with compelling beats and atmospheric synths, things take a techier twist for the edgy “South African Mix”. The highly distinctive “I Wanna See You Freak New Jersey Mix” is a real throwback to the acid house days of the late eighties. My own favourite is the mid-tempo “ATL Club Mix” with it’s synth strings and flutes. Last up is the “Original 1985 It’s Hot Mix” which is just about as raw as it gets merging electro sounds with house beats. If you’re not old enough to remember house music in its infancy then this version should offer up a perfect example. The vocals are excellent but to my mind, stand out best in the mellower mixes.

"JJazproJect Magazine Review of"

Soul Oasis pres K Joy - Butterflyz [Cyberjamz]

I was hugely impressed by K Joy's previous outing on Cyberjamz, and if anything I think this release is stronger. Unusually, I've picked out a clear personal favourite from the mixes and the "Deep Vocal Mix" is on heavy rotation chez moi. It's the most laid back of the mixes with a real touch of the early 90s in evidence. The "Spoken Word Mix" is a punchier alternative with firmer beats and striking synths. The "McEdit Dance Mix" combines firm beats with mellower keys to create a funkier vibe for those who are looking for a halfway house. Throughout the mixes, you'll find the vocals impossible to ignore. More high quality vibes from Cyberjamz.

Soul Oasis presents K. Joy "Butterflyz" (CyberJamz Records CD Promo)

K. Joy (aka Kimberly J. Salter) returns with "Butterflyz" just a few months after the release of the seminal remixes of her 1985 classic "Like this". "Butterflyz" comes in a variety of great mixes, with Chazz (Charles W. Hamilton) serving a deeply rumblin' interpretation featuring phat synth chords that harmonize perfectly with K. Joy's passionate vocals. Next is Peter 'CWB' Mooka who keeps the vibe deep while giving the track a much more laidback feel, with the wonderful melodic keys and chords creating a dreamy atmosphere. Tim McAllister reworks the track into a soulful yet fiercely thumpin' affair that features lush synths and chords, with his instrumental version being on a moodier, deeper vibe.

Bio

Who is K.Joy? Good Question! Born in Chicago under the birth name Kimberly Joy Salter (a.k.a. Kim Sutter), K.Joy started singing at the tender age of five and it didn't take long for the precocious singer to attract attention. K.Joy developed her musical abilities through studying classical piano at the American Conservatory of Music for five years, songwriting, and singing in the internationally acclaimed Chicago Children’s Choir. K.Joy continued to develop her musical abilities in high school by joining the Kenwood Academy Choir, where she won first place in a massive Kenwood talent show coordinated by known director/mentor Lena Mclin (to Chaka Khan, R.Kelly and others) beating out now multi-platinum recording artist R.Kelly. K.Joy subsequently attended Northwestern University and joined the Northwestern Community Ensemble, where she was lead vocalist for many concert songs while on tour.

In 1985, K.Joy co-wrote & recorded her first Billboard Top Music Charts - Hot 100 HOT DANCE CLUB PLAY hit: "Like This", which peaked at #15 on the chart and is a classic house music anthem currently being played in clubs and in radio rotation worldwide.  This was the illustrious beginning of K.Joy’s legendary career in the music business as a Chicago classic house music artist. During that time she opened for acts such as Roy Ayers and toured all over the U.S. and overseas.

Later in her career, K.Joy became lead singer for the band Complete Desire, which opened for the legendary 60’s group The Mighty Tams while touring throughout the U.S.  Afterwards, she began to explore her roots in hip-hop as a rapper under the artist name Saran. On “The HolyWar Records Compilation CD” K.Joy (as Saran) provided background vocals for other artists and was also the business manager for the independent label.  Her single, “Betta Way”, which she wrote, arranged, rapped, and sang, was in regular weekly rotation on the “Holy Hip Hop” radio show featured on FM 106.3 in Atlanta, GA from 1999-2000.

K.Joy now has an alter-ego with the artist name Harmonie Phoenix. Under this alter-ego she is part of the amazing duo Black's Backbone, with the artist Black (who is also a vocalist, producer, musician, audio engineer, and label owner of the Chicago independent record label they both call home: REB Records). K.Joy/Harmonie Phoenix is an artist, lyricist, singer, and arranger, whose vocal range is evidenced by her experience as lead vocalist for various genres, such as dance, jazz, gospel, classical, blues, and R&B. This versatility is the reason she returned to songwriting and singing dance music that is sold all over the world.

K.Joy has further perfected her talents by attending The Illinois Institute of Art - Chicago and obtaining a Bachelor of Science in Audio Production, and later graduated from Full Sail University with an Entertainment Business Master of Science.

Although K.Joy continues to work with various legendary producers all over the globe, for digital/vinyl releases of both singles and EP's, she most often collaborates with house music producers, Chazz of Backyard Studios in South Africa, Timmy McCallister of Chicago, Ricardo Miranda of Noble Square Recordings, and DJ Sammy Rock of Cyberjamz Records. She also has her own personal tour disc jockey, DJ DeRon, who accompanies her for all live performances.

In sum, K.Joy is a multi-faceted artist and a dedicated professional. She offers an electronic & dance music experience that is purely refreshing due to her meaningful lyrics, soulful delivery, and the immense joy her music brings to the listener. It's real music from the heart!
