"Marla Guloien in TheFGame"

What can I say about Marla Guloien? Lots but my words probably would not do her justice! I met her through school (yay SFU Communication) and have found her to be quite an inspiration, always upbeat and always dressed fabulous as you can see from these pictures. Recently she has been pursuing her love for music and been doing an amazing job at it! She’s even going to be featured on Global Morning News on Nov. 3rd, 2009 at 8:20 am so check your local listings and watch her shine. Lastly, her performance on Nov. 12, 2009 at the Star Theatre in the Planetarium is even sold out so you know that Marla is a star to watch!

Bio

My music is difficult to describe because I draw from an incredibly diverse background of influences. When I was growing up, I can remember there always being music playing in the family room. I remember practicing in my room, pretending I was one of the great singers of that time. Voices like Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, and Mariah Carey were dominating the pop scene of the 1980s, and they certainly influenced me as a songbird. These three ladies were at the top of their scene, dominating record sales and served to develop new standards of contemporary singers. They set the bar for any singer who wanted to take part in the industry in any serious kind of way. They mastered their craft of singing and influenced generations of singers and songwriters to come.

I have been a singer all my life; however, I didn’t realize this was my gift until my teen years. When I was about 15 years old, my sister told me a name of a singer who she thought I’d like. It turns out that this was the beginning of my journey to today. To this day, Erykah Badu claims a special mark on my soul for opening me up to the contemporary genre of music that I call Neo-Soul.

After Erykah Badu, there was Alicia Keys and India Arie. There was Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin, Etta James and Ella Fitzgerald. I owe thanks to Norah Jones and Corrine Bailey Rae. Beyonce has inspired me to be a strong woman in my own right and Amos Lee is one of my all time favorite singer/songwriters. Lastly, yet most important, I take influence from Dinah Washington. Her voice makes me want to sing. And I love her for that. I write from my heart. I write what inspires me. What saddens me. It is a way into who I am.
