"CD Baby Review"

We love your "MUZA: Terciopelo" CD so much that we're featuring it in our Editor's Picks section from now on.

We're *really* picky about what we feature. We get about 200-250 new albums a DAY coming in here now, (about 200,000 total), and yours is one of the best we've ever heard.

HERE'S OUR REVIEW (feel free to quote it anywhere!) Imagine Massive Attack doing a Latin jazz album, or better yet, imagine Bebel Gilberto with a trip-hop band. Somewhere near those intersections, you'll find Muza's "Terciopelo". Yes, the vocals are
velvety, as the English translation of the title implies, but the music is rich and textured as well. Electronic beats and synths decorate the traditional bolero songs here, while tremolo guitars during a song slowly grooving at 80 beats per minute can't help but remind the listener of old Portishead, such as on the song "Cruel". Many of the songs here are downtempo/chill/trip hop; call it what you will, the songs are a delectable mix of upright bass, slow and subtle beats, a variety of traditional Latin instruments, and, perhaps most
importantly, the sensuous lead vocals of the singer who calls herself Muza. It seems she's responsible for the arrangements here, and God bless her for that. The tasteful vibes on a song like "Oh Luna Nueva" are so perfectly sparse and set a wonderfully delicate framework for the muted trumpet lead in between the verses. Even if you don't
understand Spanish (as all the lyrics are in Spanish), the lovely melodies and rich, evocative production of songs come through to make this is an album perfect for cocktail hour or a romantic dinner for two.

When quoting the review, please just credit it to "CD Baby", because the review is written by either Brad, Chris, or Peter. However, if you'd like to know which one of us wrote the review, feel free to reply to this email and ask. :) This review will also be automatically added to your CD Baby page.

You should email your mailing list, telling them that you're in the prestigious Editor's Picks at CD Baby. Even fans need a reminder of how wonderful you are, and a reason to remember to tell their friends about you as well.

Just point them to your page: http://cdbaby.com/cd/muza2

We're very proud to be selling your music at CD Baby, so if there's anything we can do to help, please let us know.

Thanks!

"Terciopelo One Sheet"

Muza
Terciopelo

Electronic Bolero is how Muza describes this album. Following her Independent Music Award winning US debut album, “Cambio de Estacion,” Muza dug deep into her roots for the inspiration leading to Terciopelo. There she discovered the passionate Boleros and Bosa Novas that brought global popularity to Latin music in the late ‘50s & early ‘60s.

Terciopelo is dedicated to Consuelo Velásquez the Mexican composer of the major hits “Bésame Mucho” and “Amar y Vivar.” Muza covers these and other classics such as “Mañana de Carnaval” (“A Day in the Life of a Fool”) beautifully honoring the originals but with her unique and exciting contemporary electronic style. Additionally, Muza performs new and original songs of lost or unrequited love that flow seamlessly with the theme of this romantic album.

The English translation for Terciopelo is Velvet, perfectly describing Muza’s buttery smooth vocals. Her rendition of Bésame Mucho won the Independent Music Award for Best Cover Song and the album was a finalist for Best Latin Song & Best Latin Album.

Muza is one of the leaders of the modern Chilean music renaissance exploding in the wake of the oppressive Pinochet regime and her remarkable song-writing and arrangements prove why.

Zijzelf noemt haar stijl “electronic bolero”. “Beautiful, sensual and relaxing. I want more of these Latin velvety sounds!”

Chilean Muza brings captivating jazz-pop style to The Taos Inn

Have you ever wondered how commercial airline pilots spend their time while cruising at 30,000 feet over expansive continents? For former American Airlines pilot and Taos resident Kelly Rudy, passing time included daydreaming about having his own record label. His colleagues might have thought Rudy to have his head in the clouds when he decided to take an early retirement and invest his life savings in creating a record company, but that’s just what he did.

In 2002, he established Petroglyph Records, a locally based company that exclusively promotes musicians from Chile. Saturday (Sept. 26), Petroglyph recording artist Muza, will be performing in the Adobe Bar at the Historic Taos Inn, 125 Paseo del Pueblo Norte. This will be one of Muza’s few performances in Taos since opening for Suzanne Vega at the KTAOS Solar Center last month.

Sol Aravena is the captivating front person and creative force behind Muza. She was discovered by Rudy several years after the record label was established. “I’ve always had a passion for music,” said Rudy. “Wherever I would fly I would always take time to check out the live music.” Rudy was especially impressed with the musicians of Chile.

The Petroglyph Web site states, “Great art is often born of great suffering, such as suffering caused by political oppression. The people of Chile suffered such oppression for 17 years under the dictatorship of General Pinochet ... Years of forced silence are now broken in such stirring and beautiful ways, releasing songs that are born of suffering but rejoice in freedom.”

Rudy was disappointed to find that much of the music he was enjoying was not available as recordings. “The answer was almost always, ‘No,’ when I asked the musicians if they had a CD for purchase.

In most cases they either didn’t have the money

or they didn’t have the knowhow.” Sitting in a flamenco restaurant in Santiago one day Rudy was overcome by a desire to get involved. “Francesca Ancarola was performing and she just blew me away.”

Ancarola was the first artist to be signed with Petroglyph and now the company also represents Antonio Restucci, Marcelo Aedo, Emilio Garcia and Bombyx Mori, in addition to Muza.

When Rudy met Aravena, she was poised to record her first album, “Dream Electronica.” “I wanted to produce her and have input on the project but she already had things set in motion for a self-produced recording and there was no holding her back,” he said. According to Rudy, the MUZA Continues on Page 12

album is “a little rough” and contains more electronic sounds than he would have preferred.

Muza’s second album, “ Cambio de Estaciòn ” – her first on Petroglyph – proved to be a leap in production, winning the 2006 Independent Music Award for Best Dance/Electronica. With the inclusion of some of Latin America’s finest contemporary musicians, the recording is a tasteful and interesting blend of vocals, acoustic and electronic instr uments and digital keyboards and effects. Comprised of original songs that are sung in English and Spanish, the album moves through melancholia and exuberance and is at times subtly reminiscent of the music of Tori Amos or Bjork with a pop twist.

If “ Cambio de Estaciòn ” was a leap in production quality, “ Terciopelo,” Muza’s third album is a giant step forward in sophistication, established with the addition of trumpet and upright bass. The CD is a collection of originals and Latin American cover songs that includes Consuelo Velázquez’ “ Besame Mucho.” Muza’s sexy and haunting version of the song won the 2009 Independent Music Awards Best Cover Song.

Born a year before the overthrow of Allende’s government, Aravena grew up during a 20-year era that saw a ban on artistic expression. “Many artists were killed,” she said. “You could play music in your own home but you were not allowed to perform and you were not allowed to play in groups of more than two people.”

Now, however, Chile is seeing a renaissance in artistic expression with musicians reviving Chilean folk music as well as incorporating influences from around the globe. “My own tendency has been toward electronic music because my first instrument was the piano,” said Aravena. “It was germane for me to then move on to an electric keyboard and then computer.”

Aravena views her music as having a mystical connection. “My next album that I am working on will be called ‘Blanca.’ It’s very spiritual,” she said, in a hushed voice. “As we get older we realize that we are not so special and that we are really all just common persons. The important thing is to be together in this beautiful world.”

Bio

“I was 11 years old when my mother gave me the gift of a piano. I have played and played non-stop ever since. Everybody in my family is a musician and I grew up surrounded by music. Music has always been my mission and formal training in Music School helped me bring together the notes and pieces of melodies I had in my head to begin composing seriously. I have participated in many musical projects and have been extremely successful with a theme song for a Chilean TV series and as the composer of hundreds of jingles. Finally I decided to follow my real passion which led to my rebirth as Muza. Preserving the deep changes in my life, I down load the music from somewhere I really don t know how but it is for all of you.”

Muza grew up under the brutal dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet who essentially silenced musical expression for 17 years. During that time Chileans absorbed music from around the world. After Pinochet's departure, musicians returned to the music of their roots integrating those global influences. Muza was highly influenced by European Electronica. She added her Latin flavor and a melancholy mood reflective of growing up under Pinochet with the hope of a brighter future. Cambio de Estacion is a terrific example of this unique Electronica/Latin/Rock style Muza created.

For her third album, "Terciopelo," which means velvet in English, Muza dug deep into her roots discovering the classic Boleros and Bosa Novas of the late '50s and early 60's. She brilliantly covered timeless Latin classics with her unique contemporary style and wrote some original songs that beautifully matched their theme of lost love.

Muza was discovered by Petroglyph Records in 2004 who picked up her album "Cambio de Estacion" for international release. It won an Independent Music Award (IMA) for Best Dance/Electronica Album in 2006. Her next album with Petroglyph, "Terciopelo," won Muza a second IMA for Best Cover Song for her rendition of the classic "Besame Mucho."

After several successful trips touring Europe, Muza made her North American debut opening for Suzanne Vega and is now living in and touring the US based out of Taos, New Mexico.

Muza can travel very easily and is willing to travel anywhere in the world to perform or record.

Sounds like: Bjork, Dido, Massive Attack and Cocteau Twins.
