“I wasn’t sure what to expect when I signed up to host at a teen recovery center. It was far from the world I typically experience. It has been a long time since I’ve interacted with teens at all, not to mention teens grappling with very grown up issues. So I was very impressed with Nkechi’s skill at reigning in the group of unruly, almost overly enthusiastic kids. Soon after she took the stage it seemed as if it might be a challenge to get the teens to calm down. They may not have paid perfect attention during the songs, but at the end there was always loud applause, compliments on the singing and playing or comments on the lyrics. With this role model the crowd felt free to be themselves. Especially with the last song when one girl was invited to come up and ‘freestyle’ with Nkechi on a song that would be improvised for the group right then and there.
