"Catch Rob Decoup Live At Cafe Wha?"

Singer-songwriter and Alternative rocker, Rob Decoup, is set to play at Cafe Wha? on the 21st of February. Musically, Rob is influenced by legends such as The Beatles, The Doors, Dylan, Hendrix, and his sound’s power comes from the feverish energy of Metallica and Guns N’ Roses. Rob has been on the road since he was a boy, the things he’s seen and lived—from London to Vienna from Italy to NYC—is the tale of the poet traveler, absorbing the stories and terrors of our time with a songwriter’s eye and mind, then throwing it back into the world through rock music that has the burned and haunted edge roots of classic blues music pain.

Rob Decoup also holds a PhD in Political Science, which means he’s a natural communicator between cultures, between citizens of the world and those in power; Rob isn’t on a mission to make your body simply dance, he aspires to be a positive influence by shaping the world around him through music.

Rob’s latest song “Burn Me To The Ground” is available as a single on iTunes, while a video for the same song has also been released on Youtube. Other popular tunes by Rob Decoup include; “Say Hello To Misery,” “Stranded In Marseilles” and “Pain”.

"INTERVIEW: ROB DECOUP – ALTERNATIVE ROCK FROM NEW YORK"

HHM: You’ve been playing music since a pretty young age, what was it that drove you to learn to play?
Rob: I started being fascinated by poetry when I was around 9, and also wrote some myself, I loved the rhyme of the words and the spontaneous melody that would spring out when reciting them. Later on I decided to learn to play the guitar as a result of hearing songs like Alice Cooper’s “Steven” or Red Hot Chilli Peppers’ “I could have lied”. I had this urge to play and sing these songs myself.

HHM: How long before it turned into something that you wanted to do with your life rather than just a hobby?
Rob:Well it took a long time, giving up a secure source of income for a speculation of succeeding in the music industry is a risky decision, but I gradually went that path.

HHM: How big of an impact on your life has that decision made?
Rob:A very big impact, I am more spiritual now and take my music much more serious.

HHM: Are you originally from New York? How tough is it being an upcoming musician in NY?
Rob: I’m Austrian and grew up in Vienna and lived in Marbella, Spain before moving to New York. It was a decision I didn’t regret, as I love the City’s incredible vibe and creative energy. There are so many talented musicians here and its very rewarding to work with them and inspiring to be around them.

HHM: What would you say are some of your proudest accomplishments thus far as a musician?
Rob: I would say simply believing in myself and going ahead with a plan I made to bring my music and poetry to the world., releasing my first single and performing in some notable venues in NYC.

HHM: You definitely have a classic style, what are some of your biggest influences musically?
Rob: Well as a teenager I had my Beatles phase , and then Alice Cooper, The Doors and later on Alice In Chains. But I was also always hypnotized by classical music and opera.

HHM: What’s your writing process like?
Rob: Most of my songs are not carrying a clear straight forward message, but rather creating surreal impression through poetic verses and obscure imagery, like David Bowie’s “Life on Mars” or Alice Cooper’s song “Generation Landslide”. Or most of Jim Morrisons poetry/lyrics.
I was always fascinated by surrealism and poets with dreamy imagery and words that dont necessarily make sense but create a general sentiment or evoke something deep in our sub-conscious. Arthur Rimbaud, William Blake are my favorites, and i guess this has been reflected in my lyrics.
But with “Burn me to the Ground ” for example there is also an underlying political message of rebellion and that in the long-run true discontent of people cant be completely ignored or suppressed by the ruling elite.

HHM: Are you working on new material currently?
Rob: We just finished the production of a 4 song EP entitled “Pain” produced by Stuart Epps, who has worked with Led Zeppelin and Elton John.

HHM: When are you hoping to be able to release that to your fans?
Rob: It will be released in the next 3-4 months supported by an international tour.

HHM: Are there any updates, any other news you would like to share with readers/fans?
Rob: I would like to thank everyone for their support at my last show at Brooklyn Bowl, I was pretty sick with cold flu and fever and honestly thought i would collapse on stage, but when the music started and my drummer hit it off I was struck with lighting and temporarily healed. After the show I did collapse though. - Hellhound Music

Bio

Rob Decoup is an alternative rock singer/songwriter based in New York City.  His music comes from the surrealistic imagery of dreams weaved around his thoughts of the moral-sociological-political triumphs & struggles of his time. “When I turned 15 I got an electric guitar, but my folks didn’t know it needed an amp, so for a while I simply trained my ear and manipulated the sound with no amp!” Rob Decoup is all about invention and evolution—from his days of no-amp’d guitars to his now fully evolved razor-sharp sounds, adapting to survive is his key instinct. He holds a PhD in Political Science, which means he’s a natural communicator between cultures, between citizens of the world and those in power; Rob isn’t on a mission to make your body simply dance, he aspires to be a positive influence by shaping the world around him through music.
Musically, he’s influenced by legends such as The Beatles, The Doors, Dylan, Hendrix, and his sound’s power comes from the feverish energy of Metallica and Guns N’ Roses, just to name a couple.  Growing up in Austria, Rob has been on the road since he was a boy, the things he’s seen and lived—from London to Vienna from Italy to NYC—is the tale of the poet traveler, absorbing the stories and terrors of our time with a songwriter’s eye & mind and throwing it back into the world through rock music that has the burned & haunted edge roots of classic blues music pain.  His lyrics at times go beyond the casual Rock N Roll delirium and actually deal with current difficulties and immoralities of human civilization and offer solutions to the exploitation of the periphery by the privileged elite.  He doesn't shy away from inciting awareness and encouraging chaos and unrest to shake the system.
"As I was sitting one night in 1991 glazing at the stars, a huge cloud moved towards me in an unnatural fast speed, with fire shining brightly in the center of it. Creatures with sapphire thrones floated out of it in crafts made of two big wheels. They told me the melodies would come at night... The melodies are the weapons of choice in the inter-galactic war against the enemies of the age of Aquarius! "
When Rob Decoup comes to town, enemies of the human free spirit run and the free-spirited are energized and armed with his melodic lyrics.
Since his move to New York in March 2012, he has rocked classic venues such as Fat Baby, Pianos, Cafe Wha?, and Brooklyn Bowl and has performed along with Iron Maiden at Topfest 2013,  one of Europe's biggest rock festivals. In August 2013 he performed during Lollapalooza at the Calvin Klein Music Lounge in Chicago, and he was selected to play the CMJ Music Festival in NYC in Oct 2013.
His debut single was released Sept. 2012 and achieved great reviews on iTunes and various media outlets. His November 2013 EP "PAIN" (the title track is a cover of an Alice Cooper song) was produced by renowned European Studio musician Rens Newland, who also contributed the guitar work on all songs. The EP was remixed by Stuart Epps (Robbie Williams, Elton John, Chris Rea), and Mike Plotnikoff (Aerosmith, Buckcherry). Arejay Hale from HALESTORM played drums on all 4 songs.
The LP "Rays of Sun" produced by Mike Plotnikoff in Los Angeles is set for release in the Fall of 2014, with a new single “War Hero” coming out in early fall of 2014. Some notable musicians that played on this album include guitarists Phil X (Bon Jovi), Eric Friedman (Creed) and bassist Marty O'Brien (Tommy Lee, Lita Ford). Rob was selected for SXSW Gibson showcase at Austin Alehouse in March 2014.  Rob will be playing the Radio Contraband Rock Radio convention in January 2015, with an extended US tour to follow.
