"NPR Feature"

Sarah Kenvyn writes affecting songs with a beautiful voice. Her self-titled album for the RPM Challenge is a mix of acoustic, folk-flavored pieces, with a touch of jazz, that features the song "This is the Sea."

A multi-instrumentalist from Toronto, Ontario in Canada, Kenvyn grew up in a rural area where she studied saxophone, guitar and piano. She later took up the cello, flute and trumpet. Her music is reminiscent of other piano-pop chanteuses like Tori Amos or Regina Spektor...

Bio

At the age of 16 Sarah Kenvyn quit high school and moved to Zimbabwe to volunteer for a development aid organization. She studied with local musicians and even got to sit in with Thomas Mapfumo's brass section one late night in Harare. Although she had a spent her rural childhood learning multiple instruments, singing, studying jazz theory and writing songs in her head, it wasn't until she was living in the African bush that she started to share. Upon returning to Toronto, Canada she built a makeshift recording studio and learned how to engineer. She wrote, performed, engineered, produced, and mixed a solo album in her spare time, little by little over many years while going to University of Toronto and running a business. She finally completed her self published album "This is the Sea" in 2010. She has since played solo shows in many cities across north america and opened for one of her songwriter heroes - the legendary Ferron. Currently Sarah continues her study of neuroscience and genetics at U of T, works on her carbon neutral web design business, and plays music whenever and wherever she can.

Originally from New York City, percussionist Julie Strom completed a Doctor of Arts in 2012 and currently teaches at Wilfrid Laurier University. As an orchestral player, Julie has performed and toured internationally with groups such as the Munich Symphonic Orchestra, the Toronto Concert Orchestra, the Boulder Philharmonic, and the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. Aside from classical music, she is currently working on a drum/percussion duo with Allison Miller the former drummer for Grammy award-winning singer-songwriter, Ani DiFranco. Julie is psyched to be exploring music outside of her classical norm with Kenvyn and The Craft.

Lana Filippone grew up on the magical shores of Georgian Bay, Ontario Canada. She received her undergraduate degree from Queens University and a diploma in Craft and Design specialising in Ceramics from Sheridan College. She is an exhibiting artist, designer and maker working in clay and is currently finishing up a three year residency at Harbourfront Centres ceramic studio. Lana grew up in a musical family and has always loved singing. She joined Kenvyn and The Craft in 2013 as a vocalist.
