"Rockandroll Now! Stuka"

Rock n' Roll, now!

Stuka

Indeed, the Serbian rock 'n' roll scene has never appeared to be more peculiar than now. Almost everything happens in the shadowy isolation from the disinterested major media and wider audience, but with unremitting intensity and creativity nonetheless, widely surpassing the prevalent worthlessness of the supine, opportunist mainstream. In other words, there is plenty of individuals and bands in today's Serbia, who - despite of all mutual differences in genres and artistic approaches - managed to create a form of „parallel reality“, inhabited by - among others - „Stuka“, a trio from the town of Pancevo. Their independently released album, „Children Everywhere” sounds as if it haven't been imagined neither recorded here, but at some completely different place whatsoever; a place where hope is not routinely being taken away from struggling talent.
Therefore, this band - whose music seems to sum up the noblest elements of a wild, unrestrained, aggressive-with-the-cause rock and roll - received an invitation from one of those places, the South By Southwest festival in Austin, Texas. That was not their only presentation to the American audience, however; the band also had a concert in the New York City club Piano's late in March, along with Dorit Chrysler (who recently held a concert in Belgrade), suggesting the possibility of developing their career under different circumstances. Stuka is among the freshest and most remarkable examples of an effective punch to the head of the low-brow cultural establishment in Serbia - an ugly, amorphous mass, which simply refuses to learn that systematic denial to recognize its own potential can lead only to failure, on the edge of which it has been teetering for years anyway.

"Stuka's Debut Album Concert Promotion 2006"

Stuka's new album in the Archive Club

Fast guitar rock

The band Stuka has presented its new album, Children Everywhere, in the Archive (Arhiv) Club in Pancevo, March 5. This concert simultaneously marked the release of the album as well as the beginning of the band's tour, which is about to continue in the USA (Austin and New York).
Stuka's show itself has been conceived in a minimalist manner, with no prior announcement whatsoever, no additional preview or information about the project. The band's members have simply entered the stage and demostrated their skills during the following hour. As early as they have finished playing the opening number, the cover of „Back Door Man” (also included at the compilation „Black Spot“ - in Serbian original: „Crna tacka”), the audience became aware of their remarkable energy. This trio performs a fast, guitar-based rock, directly rooted in Detroit 1960's and 1970's scene. They've played its own songs along with the tributes. So, among other numbers, we have had a chance to hear Stuka's covers of MC5 („Ramblin' Rose”) and Iggy and The Stooges („Search and Destroy”); both performances resulted with the outbursts of approval in the audience. The band managed to strike a balance, by including the slow blues „Perfect“ in their otherwise remarkably intense and furiosly fast repertoire. Despite the hermeticism of the stage perfomance by itself, communication between the band and the audence was established spontaneously, in the authentic atmosphere of a club.
Stuka is being given an opportunity to present its work to the foreign audience and compare itself with the fellow r 'n' r bands in the US. Hopefully, the experiences they're about to acquire abroad will be wisely incorporated into their future projects.

"History of R'n'R in Pancevo"

A concert promotion of A Helicopter On the Head

Rocknroll forever

A very nice hall of the Art and Culture Association Petefi Sandor, very appropriate for this occasion, turned into a music time machine, evoking the memories and reminiscences of some different times, people and lifestyles by the means of music.

A big rock concert organized for the promotion of the book A Helicopter On the Head by author Vladimir Nedeljkovic, published by NGO Team for communication, was held on Friday, 3rd June, in the premises of the Art and Culture Association Petefi Sandor. The book outlines the history of rock music in our town from the very beginning to the present day, and this well-planned concert fit in very nicely, illustrating the book in the best possible way. No less than eight bands performed that evening: The Phoenixes, Haski, The Kings, the Tip-Top, the Bas Celik, the Zontag, the Fancy Frogs and the Stuka. This list actually represents a small appendix to Nedeljkovics book (which does not exist in its printed version), i.e. it is the list of the most significant bands on the local scene of all times, in the authors opinion.
(PHOTO)
The bands performed chronologically: first, we had an opportunity to see and hear the true legends of Pancevos rock n roll, then the representatives of the so-called mid-generation, and finally the young but nevertheless excellent fellows. The concert was opened by the local rock pioneers - The Phoenixes, a band which was founded in 1962, and is considered to be the cornerstone of the whole rocknroll scene. Right after that the Haski came onto the stage, proving their reputation as the local Stones. At the very beginning of their performance the famous guitar riff from Jagger and Richardss song The Last Time and the thunder of Dragan Veselinovs drums announced the beginning of real fulfillment. From that moment on, the very nice hall of the Art and Culture Association Petefi Sandor which was appropriate for this occasion, turned into a music time machine capable of evoking the memories and reminiscences of some different times, people and lifestyles, by the means of music. Right after that the Haski honored us with probably the greatest song in the history of rock music I Cant Get No (Satisfaction). All the barriers broken down, the happy faces of the people of all generations cheered the musicians to the very end of the manifestation.

The band Haski was replaced on stage by equally famous and adored The Kings. Their legendary energetic frontman Radica Kings heated the atmosphere by his performance and his voice. Jumping Jack Flash, You really Got Me, Born to Be Wild, Paranoid and other songs were performed one after another. This band, as it suits the band that marked the 70s, ended their performance with the Motorheads Ace of Spades.

To convince us that the local rock scene was not limited simply to playing other peoples music, the band Tip-Top played their own songs. After that, the Bas Celik with their frontman Aleksandar Zikic, a distinguished rock publicist nowadays, was responsible for one of the numerous climaxes of the evening. This band, a former local new wave hope, played several songs among which the two great songs that are rarely performed here, but which are, judging by the reaction of the audience, eagerly expected: I Shall Be Released by Bob Dylan, the harmonica played by Gabor Fodor and Lou Reeds Walk on the Wild Side, solo guitar played by Vlada Nedelja.
It was especially touching when the professor Mica Ilic gave his drumsticks to his son Relja, who after that accompanied the band Bas Celik in one of their songs.
The Zontag, Vladimir Nedeljkovics band, performed after Bane Lokner, a music critic, came on the stage and shared his impressions on the book A Helicopter On the Head with the audience. On the request of the audience Zontag started their performance by the song Africa, followed by other songs, altogether excellent. Vlada Nedelja found his ideal fellows in his music visio, in three musicians from Vrsac. Marinko from the band Bjesovi showed up as a special guest and later gave an exclusive mini-performance.

The grand finale of the concert was reserved for the dark and gothic band called The Fancy Frogs, and also for the garage band called the Stuka, which consists of the three members of the former band the Fuzz.
The concert promotion of the book A Helicopter On the Head was not just an ordinary music happening, but also an opportunity for old friends to meet again, and to regain old and make new acquaintances. There was no generation gap among the audience, just good vibrations. A similar concert in the near future would obviously be a Bingo.

“METAMORPHOSING” PUBLIC SPACES IN PANCEVO

EVERYBODY, COME TO THE PLATEAU
IN FRONT OF THE MUSEUM!

Last Saturday, the realization of the “Ship aground“ project continued
• Cannon roared, the gang gathered together, the ship went aground

On 13th August, the second day of the realization of the “Ship Aground” project, which aims to enhance the utilization of the public spaces in Pancevo, cannon was heard in the town park!

(PHOTO)

As a part of the project called PAPS (Public Art and Public Space), the “Refraction” team (Andja, Suza & Sneza), supported by the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Belgrade, wish to draw the public attention to the spaces in Pancevo which deserve more care and to explore new possibilities for their use. The first such space to be “enlivened” was the plateau in front of the Museum building.

The “Ship Aground” project aims to demonstrate the tight bond between the town of Pancevo and its river, the Tamis. In the said space, there have been installed shipbuilding objects, which have an entirely new meaning here and breathe a new life into this part of the town.

The citizens of Pancevo, passing through the park could leave their messages in fishing nets, bottles, on fishing hooks, in ports or on the high seas…Who they would like to catch in their nets, where they would like to go aground, who they would like to see cannoned – these were just some of the questions they were asked.

The cannon tradition was started in 1844, announcing the first steam boat that arrived in Pancevo. From that time on, that was the way of informing the citizens that a ship had docked into the port, so that they could gather and see the merchandise it carried. The cannon exist even today in front of the Museum, and after a long period of silence, it roared again on this August evening. This part of the programme pointed out that tradition and heritage can be explored and that they can offer new meanings to the old symbols which are thus kept alive and follow us in time.

Under the sails of the “Ship Aground” in the center of our town, we could hear the “roar” of DJ Bee Gees, the garage trio the The Stuka and the mystical dark rock band The Fancy Frogs.

For the third day of the project, 19th August, the “Refraction” team has announced the performance of “Spleen Theater” with a party afterwards. On the following day, 20th August, at 9 p.m. there will be video- art show.

Bio

STUKA is a hard working, self-managed band from the main industrial center in Serbia, Pancevo. The major influences are: American garage rock, psychedelia of the late 60's and some New Wave elements, particularly the Yugoslav New Wave of the early 80's. STUKA worked as a trio until the end of 2006, when a new singer joined the band.

They organized one of the wildest live music private parties in the Belgrade's famous "Bitef Art Cafe" where they jammed with "The Dickle Brothers", a fun project of "Garbage", July 5, 2005.
The day after, both bands, Garbage and Stuka played at the biggest music festival in Former Yugoslavia, the "EXIT Festival". Stuka played on a small stage for unrenowned bands while Garbage played on the main stage (of course).

Stuka was the first Serbian band that played at the "South By Southwest" festival in Austin, Texas, USA. Spiro's Club, March 16, 2006.

After SXSW the band members spent three months in USA, mostly exploring Texas and making footage for the documentary "Lost in Austin" a story about an independent Serbian band and its adventurous travels through Texas and the SXSW 2006 festival. It shows the festival in all its splendour, their trip to NYC and the people they met on their way to the unknown.

Stuka opened for The Black Godfather of Soul, Mr. Andre Williams, in Belgrade's SKC, Sep 30, 2006.

They were the winners of the multimedia " Joy Art " Festival in Brassov, Romania, 2006.

STUKA played at the "Belgarde's Beer Fest", the biggest music festival in Serbia, August 2007.

The band had a DIY mini tour in Serbia named "Lost In Serbia 2007" throughout the year.

Another mini tour in Serbia with an Italian band "The Intellectuals" was organized in October 2007, by "Bad Music For The Bad People", Belgrade.

Stuka recorded three new songs (My Heaven, Strength, Backdoor Man) in their home studio with a new singer and a new bass player as a preparation for the new album in October 2007.

In November 2007 Stuka was invited to come to Brassov again and do a big show as the last year's winners of the Joy Art Festival.
