Tejas Singh
A Brief History
Posted by Ben Thompson

The singer-songwriter genre has never been more popular. Ever since Dave Matthews created a band in his own image, loads of talented artists have emerged with something to say and something to prove.

Tejas Singh is another in a long line of talented song writers that nobody's ever heard of. This young man just released a new EP, A Brief History on Nice Rip Media.

Singh incorporates simple blues standards with quick, upbeat guitar and drum work. It's all brought together by his image evoking stories. His description of the fallacies of white man from discovering America to slavery to corporate thievery is brilliant on the title track, "A Brief History."

Every ounce of Singh's lyrical prowess is insightful and endearing, while focusing on battling the wrongs of man throughout the EP.

At an EP price, A Brief History is a can't miss for singer-songwriter fans or anybody else looking to get in on the ground level for this emerging artist.

D.C.-bred (by way of India) Tejas Singh was heavily influenced by the popular jam bands of his adolescence, and it shows on his EP “A Brief History.” The singer/songwriter’s vocals are Ben Harper and Ray LaMontagne-inspired in their shaky but strong delivery while his uptempo instrumentals combine racing rhythms with bluegrass, soul, and R&B. Singh’s tracks seem tailor-made for alternately frantic and free-flowing dance moves in college venues or outdoor festivals. While his influences are easy to spot, Singh asserts his individuality on his lyrics which are poignant and relevant. On “A Brief History” Singh frankly tackles race (“white man came on a wooden ship/black man could not believe his eyes/white man crammed his ships with everyone that he could fit/continuing his crimes/you cannot take me, I will not go”), while on “The Rescue,” he points a finger at society and government (“mother culture spoke into my ear/she said you’re young and rich and you have nothing to fear” and “are you conscious of a careless government/are you part of it”). On “Ghosts” Singh contemplates the plight of the artist (“artists are just ghosts/people like us disappear,” questions the economy of the country (“everyone is profiting from things this country stole”), and ultimately applies delightfully adolescent existentialism to the plight (“you will die/but you can’t take all your gold/so buy me a beer and let’s get stoned”). Singh’s appeal lies in his ability to deliver to both the zoned-out jam set and the contemplative critic. - Rebel Spirit Music

Tejas Singh is a singer/songwriter from New York. His mini album A Brief History is a gem waiting to be found. Great guitar work, original bass lines. Tejas Singh names Dave Matthews as one of his influences, but it's quite clear that he has listened a lot to the guitar playing of Trey Anastasio. Backed by a tight band, Tejas Singh should be quite capable to cut loose, stretch out the songs and jam extensively. - Here Comes the Flood (Posted by Hans Werksman)

Bio

Tejas Singh is an Indian born singer songwriter who grew up outside of D.C. and now lives in New York City. He is a versatile songwriter and front man, capable of producing original material in both a solo and full band setting. He draw s on songwriters such as Elliot Smith, Ben Folds, Jack Johnson and John Mayer, absorbing their senses of melody and song structure, yet never losing his ability to produce strongly original material, both familiar and unique.

His first official release came in May of 2007, shortly after moving to New York to pursue music full time. The EP, A Brief History, is a six song record running just over twenty minutes that explores some of his more recent musical influences, with up tempo blue grass beats and a lyrical overtone that is socially and politically conscious without being contrived or preachy. With a repertoire of over fifty original songs, it is sure to be the first of many recordings from this young artist, who may yet prove to be one of the next members in the long line of great contemporary songwriters.

The debut full length album, Fast Asleep but Running, is currently in production and will be released late summer 2010. check www.tejassingh.com for updates
