"Music"

Go to any camp meeting service and you will be greeted by singing.  The singing evangelist this year was Theresa Morton who is an accomplished vocalist, songwriter, arranger and director.  Her voice at times sounded like Whitney Houston and the songs that she chose were divine in style.  For those who appreciated her jazz-fusion style, she was a diva with an attitude. - Messenger (Journal of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in the United Kingdom and Ireland)(19 July 20

"SEC Camp Meeting 2002"

The singing evangelist for the week was Theresa Morton, from Atlanta, Georgia. Theresa has what can only be described as a "voice". Her renditions of such songs as "The Midnight Cry" and "We Need a Word from the Lord" were extremely powerful.

Bio

As the daughter of a Baptist minister, Theresa Morton was exposed to Gospel music from the day she was born. Even with her early roots in the Church, no one could have predicted what happened one fateful morning in Cleveland, OH when the five-year-old Theresa sat down at the family piano and, much to her family’s astonishment, belted out her own incredible version of “At the Cross.” After that morning, the youthful Theresa went out on road with her father, singing at the churches where her father preached, and laying foundation for a future in Gospel music.

Although Gospel music has always been Theresa’s first love, during her teenage years she began to appreciate other genres of music. She was particularly fond of contemporary jazz artists such as Roy Ayers, Grover Washington, Jr., Earl Klugh and Lee Ritenour. During that period, Theresa first envisioned herself writing songs that combined her love of Gospel and jazz. Theresa continued to refine her artistry as a student at Bowling Green State University where she acted with a local theater company, danced with the Peter Fields Dance Company, and toured with the Bowling Green State University Gospel Choir.

After college, Theresa took a break from her music to concentrate on her family. Unfortunately, Theresa's marriage ended in divorce. Faced with the uncertainties of being a single mother, Theresa refused to give up. Instead, she fought back with the tools that God equipped her with-----prayer, praise, and the gift of song. Songs of praise and thanks began to flow from her spirit. During those difficult times Theresa wrote songs to encourage not only herself, but other single parents who shared her fate. The end result is “Thank You,” Theresa’s highly-acclaimed debut CD, which is a unique blend of jazz, neo-soul, R&B and traditional Gospel sung with strength and passion that only Theresa can deliver. In addition, Theresa formed Theresa Morton Ministries to help spread her message of love and hope to other single parents.

Theresa continues to share her gift of music with the world both in person and through her website, www.theresamorton.com. Her travels have taken her throughout Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Tennessee, Louisiana, Pennsylvania, Texas, and even London, England. She has given of herself and shared her musical gift in many cultural, civic and religious events and with organizations including the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Foundation, the Black Expo USA, Trinity Broadcasting Network, the 100 Black Men, The American Business Women’s Association, The Coca-Cola Foundation, the legendary Apollo Theater, and a host of churches and ministries. She has opened for award-winning Gospel artists such as Yolanda Adams, Donnie McClurkin, Trin-i-tee 5:7, Marvin Sapp, Babbie Mason, Lee Greenwood and Virtue. During the 1996 Summer Olympic Games Theresa had the honor of forming a mass choir to accompany the world-renowned recording artist Celine Dion.

Theresa’s accomplishments have not gone unnoticed. In 2000, Theresa was honored as the Atlanta Gospel Choice Awards Best Female Vocalist.
