Way back in 2000, legendary hip-hop duo dead prez declared that “It’s bigger than hip-hop” on their group-defining track “Hip-Hop.” Old heads and new heads alike flocked to the track and regarded it as a staple of classic hip-hop. The duo had been together for a while, but it wasn’t until this record dropped that their music started gaining some widespread attention.
Last month, dead prez headed back to Tallahassee where they first met in 1990. They played a 4/20 show for FAMU students and linked up with an up-and-coming Florida crew, Nefa Zoo. The duo recorded a new track with one of Nefa Zoo’s members, Trx. This was the first song they recorded in Tallahassee since the 90's. The collaboration resulted in “Time Travel,” a spaced-out track unlike anything dead prez has been a part of before.
stic.man and M-1 sound right at home on this one. stic.man spits a hot 16 about his new love — running and M-1 raps about traveling through time. Trx provides the hook, and all together, the three sound right at home on this track. “Time Travel” is the first single off of Trx’s new mixtape dropping this summer, Free The Animals. - RESPECT Magazine
Just a few months ago, Urban Asian introduced you to the up and coming hip-hop collective, Nefa Zoo . Based in Florida, this group of Indian rappers have a diverse style and sound that has caught the ears of many. In just a short time, the group has been played on radio stations across the US, worked and performed with major artists such as Gorilla Zoe, and released three mixtapes, most recently “Test Date” by Trx just weeks ago on January 29, 2012. We recently sat down with Trx and Wats_n to catch up with their latest ventures.
Urban Asian: Your music is very unique to those styles associated with the South, for example T.I, Rick Ross, or T-pain. As rappers from Florida, what influences you to be different?
Trx: Growing up, we listened to such a variety of music that anything that catches our ear is what appeals to us, that’s the best way to sum it up. I enjoy quite the range of music and it all influences what I’m making.
Wats_n: Yeah, like [Trx] said, we have had exposure to many different types of music, so our tastes aren’t bound by geography. Obviously rap is the primary influence, but there’s so much else out there.
Trx: We have common influences but our own styles. It’s just by what feels right for us.
UA: So do you think being so unique from your area will affect your popularity?
Trx: Only in a positive way, people like artists for their unique tastes.
UA: Trx, you just released your 2nd mixtape “Test Date”. There is definitely a variety of sounds, from club bangers to R&B ballads and even Modern Hippie, which sounds like a generation-defining track. Your previous mixtape “MKAT” had a similar mix, what inspires you to make such a broad range of music?
Trx: The broad range comes from me letting out different emotions. Some songs have stories behind them, some are ideas, some are just random rants of inspiration. All these behaviors are what make a person up, this is just my version of them. Me being me.
UA: Wats_n, your song “My Rani” is the perfect blend of old school Bollywood and new school hip hop. Is Bollywood and Hindi music a big influence for you?
Wats_n: I was exposed to a lot of Bollywood and Indian classical music at a young age by my parents; it was never really my first choice in music but I learned to appreciate it. A lot of rap music has Indian and Bollywood samples but I wanted to capture the themes and emotions of typical Bollywood songs and showcase them in a modern light.
UA: So do you think Bollywood-inspired tracks can appeal to people outside the South Asian community?
Wats_n: For sure. Music is universal, especially now. Like, Akon and Snoop Dogg both have done Bollywood tracks. A$AP Rocky caught a lot of intrigue for using sounds innovated in Houston, and he’s from Harlem; Drake has remixed Lykke Li and Peter Bjorn and John tracks. So I think good music is just good music–it can surpass boundaries between regions and genres and can appeal to anyone anywhere.
UA: As Indians pursuing careers in hip-hop, do you feel that your desi background is a hindrance or an advantage to “making it” in this industry?
Trx: Definitely an advantage. We have an entire subcontinent [India] that would be more inclined to our music because of our heritage. Being different from the norm helps too. A good current example is Jeremy Lin; his national buzz having an international influence.
Wats_n: Our backgrounds are pretty unique for hip-hop, so that’s a great advantage, in my view–the ability to provide a new perspective and some new voices. And we’ve gotten a lot of support so far from the Indian community, so I’m sure it’ll be an asset in the future.
UA: Well while we’re on the topic of the two of you together, you collaborate quite often—each of you has a definite presence on the other’s mixtapes. Trx, what was it like working with major artists such as Gorilla Zoe?
Trx: It was inspiring more than anything. Gorilla Zoe, someone I listened to during my high school homecomings, believes in the sounds I’m making. It was surreal at first, but it really reinforced my belief in my music; not to mention that we made two very great and very different songs: if you haven’t heard – go listen to “Private Dancer” or “BulletProof” (laughs).
UA: Can we expect to see you working with other rappers?
Trx: As long as I can mesh with another artist and our tastes blend, it would definitely work.
UA: What can we expect from Nefa Zoo in the near future?
Wats_n: We’re gonna continue to focus our efforts on perfecting our craft and putting out new music. It really comes down to providing fans with what they want. And also, anyone who hasn’t heard our material needs to stop slacking (laughs)..

Trx, born to Indian immigrants, grew up in the suburbs of sunny Orlando, FL. As a middle-schooler, Trx was inspired by artists like Jay-Z, Eminem, and 50 Cent. Armed with a laptop and bootleg recording software, Trx started secretly recording songs while his parents went to work. Trx’s studio comprised of his laptop and trial-version recording software. Although he showed prodigious aptitude and swagger for a 14-year-old, Trx felt discouraged by his cultural surroundings to seriously pursue a career in hip-hop. Instead, he focused on his studies like his peers and excelled academically.
Years later, May 2011, Trx found himself as a pre-med student in Tallahassee preparing to take the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT). To clear his mind in between long study sessions and practice tests, Trx began where he left off as a teenager - recording songs on his laptop. Word of Trx’s music spread quickly through his friends circle, and they started passing around mix CDs of Trx’s homemade recordings. Eventually, one of the CDs made its way to Nappy Boy Studios of Tallahassee, and Trx was encouraged to start recording in their booth.
Seeing the potential of his music, Trx tapped his crew to form Nefa Zoo, a creative collective that would serve as the infrastructure for the creation, distribution, and promotion of musical works. After taking his MCAT exam in July 2011, Trx began to work on his mixtape debut MKAT. Buzz around Trx quickly spread throughout the studio and eventually throughout Tallahassee after a series of energetic live performances at a local talent showcase.
The line between his dreams and reality started to blur when Trx was recruited to open for Gorilla Zoe on September 8th, 2011 in Athens, Georgia. After that show, Trx began working with Gorilla Zoe in the studio. Their sessions culminated as two songs “BulletProof” and “Private Dancer”. Gorilla Zoe, an industry veteran, offered Trx constructive advice and strong praise, which further encouraged Trx to pursue a career in hip-hop.
Elated by the events of the past five months, Trx directed all his focus towards music and away from the academic realm. Two weeks after the Zoe concert, he released MKAT on Sept. 21st, 2011. Relentless as ever, he immediately begun working on his sophomore mixtape Test Date, which was completed during a three-month long creative burst. The tape represented a new standard for Trx’s music. Fueled by its lead single “Ignited,” Test Date garnered significant praise from the Tallahassee hip-hop community as well as the internet.
The former pre-med student started to see his hard work materialize as he secured consecutive opening spots for Curren$y (3/17/12), Midnight Conspiracy (4/06/12), and Dead Prez (4/20/12). The weekend of the Dead Prez concert, M-1 of Dead Prez walked into a Trx recording session and, impressed by what he heard, agreed to collaborate on what would become Trx’s next single, “Time Travel.”
“Time Travel” featuring Dead Prez was released on Trx’s third mixtape, Free The Animals on June 4th, 2012. The single received positive attention and garnered a spot on the RESPECT. Magazine website. The 12 tracks on Free The Animals serve as a compilation of Trx’s best work to date, showcasing Trx’s signature raw delivery and penchant for melodic hooks.
As far as Trx has come on his wild ride from the MCAT to MKAT and beyond, he understands the fleeting nature of success. After all, his parents journey took them from India halfway around the world to the United States. So if you ask Trx, his journey just started.
