"3 Inches of Blood, Akimbo, Hell Promise, I Am the Thorn, Witchburn - June 29, 2007 - El Corazon"

Better Than: Trying to stay true to old school metal by listening to the scratched copy of Judas Priest's British Steel that you stole from your dad in junior high. Northwest metal is alive and well, and ready to kick your (bleep) ass. The proof came in the form of a face melting show last night at El Corazon. 3 Inches of Blood headlined and brought out tunes from their new release Fire Up the Blades. Along with them came a slew of local acts that very well could be the next big thing in metal.

The first act, Witchburn, reminded me of one thing: There are not enough women in metal. With vocals, lead guitar, and bass all provided by exceptionally talented (and yes, exceptionally sexy) women, Witchburn are a band Seattle should be seeing more of. They did say this was their first show, so we can't exactly see any less of them. When the black-dreadlocked guitarist traded her axe for a violin for their final song, the idea of seeing what else this band is capable of became even more attractive.

"Witchburn – Members of Drop Six and Hell's Belles merge into a killer new Seattle band"

One of the more promising and popular new bands on the Seattle rock music scene is Witchburn. The newly formed band has sparked much interest and an instant following, due in large part to the line-up, which is a merge of the two well known rock bands. Witcbburn consists most of the members of Drop Six with the addition of the lead singer for the AC/DC all female tribute band Helle's Belles, Jamie Nova. Drop Six, played its final show earlier this year at El Corazon in Seattle to a huge crowd. Seattle rock music fans were quite pleased to learn the core of the band would continue on in a new project.

I saw Witchburn live last month for the first time at the same club Drop Six played it's farewell show, El Corazon. Once again the crowd at El Corazon was large, and I was very impressed with the songwriting, playing ability and audience reaction. The Witchburn set, was obviously well rehearsed, mistake free and 100% professional from beginning to end. It was obvious the band was made up of musicians who had been around the business a long time, who had put quite a bit of time into the songwriting, rehearsal, and stage presentation of the band. I predict Witchburn is going to be as big, if not bigger, than Drop Six which had a huge following by the time the band called it quits...
Witchburn is now on myspace and has posted music, band and club date information there. I personally love the band because they are playing music that I love to listen to. I also know that with the line-up and with the amount of time they have put into making this a pro act Witchburn is going to be one of Seattle's biggest bands in the upcoming months and we assume years.

"Vicious Vinni's BRUTAL REVIEW"

FIRST OF ALL I GOT THIS CD IN THE MAIL ON MY WAY OUTTA TOWN, NO BIO, NO PICS, NO NOTHING. ANYWAY, I PUT THE CD IN, CRANKED IT AND WAS GETTING READY (JUST IN CASE THEY WERE A SUPERSONIC,SPEED, DEATH, THRASH METAL BAND). THE FIRST RIFF HIT AND I WAS LIKE, ALRIGHT A SOUTHERN METAL BAND! I'M ALL ABOUT IT! THEN THE VOCALS KICK IN AND I'M THINKING THIS GUY SOUNDS LIKE ONE OF THOSE KICK ASS 80'S METAL VOCALISTS SO NOW I'M REALLY DIGGIN' IT. A LITTLE FURTHER INTO IT I'M TELLING MYSELF "HEY, THIS DUDE'S A CHICK!" GRRRRR! I LOVE METAL CHICKS. AFTER I GET TO CHECK OUT THEIR MYSPACE [PAGE], I FIND OUT THEY HAVE MORE CHICKS (I LOVE MORE CHICKS) OK! BACK TO THE CD! I REALLY LIKE ALL OF THEIR TUNES, HALLOWED GROUND WAS MY FAVE! THE GUITAR RIFFS ARE KICKIN', NICE CATCHY RHYTHMS WITH A LOT OF THAT SOUTHERN SOUL. THE RHYTHM SECTION IS NICE AND TIGHT, NOT OVERPLAYED. I'M A BELIEVER THAT SOMETIMES LESS IS MORE. VOCALS ARE VERY COOL, WITH A LOT OF RANGE. I LOVE THIS CHICK'S VOICE. THE CD ITSELF WAS PRETTY GOOD (ALTHOUGH IT IS A DEMO) IT IS A VERY GOOD START. (I WAS GOIN' 95 DOWN THE INTERSTATE BY THE SECOND SONG). I WOULD LIKE TO HEAR THESE GUYS (GIRLS) GET INTO A STUDIO WITH SOME MONEY AND A REALLY GOOD PRODUCER. I THINK THEY'D PUT OUT A SCORCHER OF A ALBUM. SO, IF YOU LIVE IN THE SEATTLE AREA AND GET A CHANCE TO CHECK 'EM OUT, GET YOUR ASS OUT THERE AND SUPPORT THEM - AND BUY THEIR SHIT! CHECK 'EM OUT ON MYSPACE AND LET THEM KNOW WHAT YOU THINK. TILL NEXT TIME: GET VICIOUS , GET METAL, OR GET OUT.

"Witchburn, Soldiers of the Righteous - Exotic Underground Live Review"

Several months ago, following an unexpected visit to the High Dive in
Fremont, I was given the gift of hope in the potential future of rock and
roll. If you think long and hard about classic heavy metal rock and roll, there
really aren’t that many contemporary examples that fit the genuine profile
set by monsters of rock, such as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest anymore.
But all within a short time frame, several local Seattle bands have shown me
the light of belief again. First there was Mos Generator next was Zero Down
and, completing this holy trinity, there was the mighty Witchburn.
While hanging out in a dark corner of the High Dive, I was literally
knocked off my feet by the power Witchburn unleashed on stage with a
solid set of classic metal anthems, packed with epic guitars, thunderous
rhythms and commanding vocals. Witchburn’s four-track EP originally
caught my attention late last year when it was reviewed in Underground,
but after witnessing the power of Witchburn live on stage, I was instantly a
true believer. Their songs are packed with powerful messages that take the
witch hunts of lore into the modern age, while defending what they believe
in through the fire of their music.
I honestly can’t remember the last time I was glued to a band’s stage from
the first song to the last. But Witchburn managed to hold me captivated,
as each song drew me deeper into the music. After they completed their set
that night, I was so blown away by what I had just witnessed, I asked the
band about the possibility of doing our anniversary cover and plans were
set in motion. Sometime between here and there, the evil fact that our
anniversary edition would also be our last issue crept into the picture. With
commitments we had already made with other upcoming cover models to
consider, we were going to have to make some difficult decisions. I popped
Witchburn’s EP into the player and looked to the music to find some
guidance. In the end, it was a no-brainer. It only took about an hour of
absorbing lyrics, which told the tales of fighting for your beliefs, standing
up and turning the fires of persecution on those that oppress. Seeing as how
that pretty much summed up the battle of putting this magazine out over
the past 4 years, the music of Witchburn would be the perfect soundtrack
for Underground’s farewell to Seattle.
Witchburn is metal with brains, so we decided to get you all a little more up
close and personal to see what goes on inside the minds behind the music.
Witchburn is:
Jamie Nova: Vocals—Shure Beta 58—born in Rapid City, SD.
Mischa Kianne: Guitar, Violin—Gibson Les Paul Standard, Marshall JCM
2000, Marshall 4x12 cab.—born in Ridgecrest, CA.
Jacy Peckham: Guitar—Custom Gibson SG Silver Burst, EMG Pickups,
Mesa Boogie Tremoverb, Mesa 4x12 cab.—born in Phoenix, AZ.
Jessica Bos: Bass, backing vocals—Gibson Thunderbird Bass—Born in
Provo, UT.
Joe Frothingham: Drums—born in Everett, WA.
Tell us about your previous band history and any current side projects.
Mischa: Jacy and I started playing in bands together in Southern
California in the year 1992. Most recently, we had been playing in Drop
Six together in Seattle for 6 years, toward the end of which I began putting
Witchburn together.
Jamie: I portray Bon Scott/Brian Johnson in the all female AC/DC tribute
band, Hell’s Belles, and also sing and play my Gibson SG in a punk rock
band THE MOENS along side of Mandy Jennings Reed of Hell’s Belles and
Neutral Boy. YES, I am in three bands.
Jessica: I played bass and sang for Flasque in 2000 to 2003, then played
bass and did part time vocals for Tranquilized in 2004 to 2006.
Joe: I played drums in Himsa for the better part of the last year that the band
was together. Prior to that I also played in Go Like Hell and Bury Me Deep.
How about sharing your influences, both musically and spiritually?
Mischa: Black Sabbath, rain, red meat, red wine, fire and fingers.
Jacy: Jazz, punk rock, God, friends and family.
Jamie: I was raised in a very strict Christian home, so I was surrounded
by gospel music and four-part harmonies growing up. Other influences
include Led Zeppelin, Ann Wilson, Rob Halford, AC/DC, Black Sabbath,
Patsy Cline, Bad Religion and the Descendants. Aside from the music, I am
also inspired by Carlos Castaneda, Greek mythology, red wine, red meat and
FIRE. LOTS OF FIRE!
Jessica: I grew up in a musical family and was raised on heavy metal and
horror movies, which is a lot of what has influenced me. Some of my favorite
bands are Black Sabbath, Acid Bath, Deftones, Sleep, Mastodon, Neurosis,
Pantera, The Sword, Orange Goblin, Electric Wizard and pretty much any
project involving Dax Riggs or Scott “Wino” Weinrich.
Joe: Uncle Pete and Aunt Bonie (musically), Mom and Dad (in living
good lives) and Grandma and Grandpa (in leaving a wonderful legacy).
If you could create your fantasy rock and roll supergroup, who would the
members be?
Mischa: Dual drummers Dave Lombardo (Slayer) and Brann Dailor
(Mastodon) with Steve Harris (Iron Maiden) on bass, Brent Hinds
(Mastodon) and Buzz Osbourne (Melvins) on guitar and vocals, Mike
Patton on lead vocals (and all the other crazy shit he does), myself on violin
and David Lee Roth on backflips and roundhouse kicks!
Jacy: Lenny Burnett of Zero Down and myself on guitars, Rick Allen of Def
Leppard on drums, Jason Bordeaux on bass and Oderus Urungus on vocals.
Jessica: Vocals: Dax Riggs, Guitar: Dimebag Darrell, Drums: Igor Cavalera
and Bass: Les Claypool. That would be outta control!
Joe: Zakk Wylde and Stevie Ray Vaughan on guitars, Cliff Burton on bass,
myself on drums and a young Robert Plant on vox.
Care to close with a favorite quote?
Mischa: Whole heart, horns high!
Jacy: “All the technique in the world don’t mean shit if it don’t sound
right.” (Lemmy Kilmister)
Joe: “Arm the humble.” (Tom Morello of Audioslave)
Jamie: “A cloud does not know why it moves in such a direction and at
such a speed, it feels an impulsion...this is the place to go now, but the sky
knows the reasons and the patterns behind all clouds and you will know, too,
when you lift yourself high enough to see beyond horizons.” (Unknown)

WITCHBURN
Heavy, down tuned, southern fried, whiskey soaked sabbra cadabra. Their live show pulsates with seething and sultry, sweaty energy. Bringing as much groove as brutal thunder, the music is like a hammer straight to your soul, crashing down through the sky... only you welcome its impact the moment they tear into their first song. Spilling their guts on every stage they play, they've opened for Slipknot, Helmet, Crowbar, Saint Vitus, Blue Cheer, Mudvayne, Fu Manchu, 3 Inches of Blood, Trouble, Zeke, Pentagram and Valient Thorr, to name a few. Featuring the soaring, soulful vocal power and prowess of Jamie Nova and the monster riff-crafting of Mischa Kianne on guitar and occasionally violin, along with the unmatched low-end heaviness of Jacy Peckham on bass coupled with the bone-crushing, rock solid groove provided by Dana Sims on drums, Witchburn is the sound of rebellion in the voice of a hate-child conceived during a mythical orgy between Black Sabbath, Janis Joplin, Ronnie James Dio and Heart.

Witchburn delivers passionate, moody southern metal, made even more potent by the band's fierce energy and considerable musical chops. The smoky grooves are deep and heavy, tapping into a classic rock vein with gritty guitar lines, seamlessly blending vintage rock influence with that of modern metal. Their ready-for-battle anthems, apocalyptic overtones and dirty, doom-laden riffs keep your ears glued while confirming that these are dedicated musicians with genuine love for all that is heavy. Singer Jamie Nova is also well known for her former role as lead vocalist in the all female AC/DC tribute band Hell's Belles, in which she portrayed Bon Scott and Brian Johnson with her surprisingly expressive vocal range. Seeing what else this band is capable of becomes even more attractive when the black-dreadlocked guitarist trades her Les Paul for a violin on a song or two. Their mighty riffing, powerful vocals and kick ass, shout-along choruses completely galvanize even the most skeptical listeners, sending them promptly into blissful abandon as they surrender to pumping their fists in the air.

In the summer of 2010, the band independently released their first full-length album, This Is How We Slay Our Demons... which features 13 original tracks and was produced by Seattle's legendary Jack Endino (Nirvana, High on Fire, Zeke, Valient Thorr, 3 Inches of Blood to name but a few). They followed the release with aggressive touring throughout the western half of the US that summer, the following winter, and into the spring. They were also featured in the line up of Northwest summer festival concerts PDX Rockfest and the KISW Pain in the Grass 2011 alongside Korn, Queensryche, Chevelle, Hinder, Five Finger Death Punch, All That Remains and more, as well as Bumbershoot 2011 in Seattle with Pentagram, Valient Thorr, Red Fang and more. The band completed a European tour of in the fall of 2011 and are about to head to Hawaii for just a couple of dates before they hit the road to tour the states again in both March and April.
Witchburn has also garnered strong support from radio, including KISW in their native Seattle. The opening track on their debut offering, "Bleed the Stone", was featured in the KISW 9 O’clock Cockfight with Jolene, where it went on to win the maximum 7 times in a row before the song was placed in the Cockfight's "Hall of Fame". The station has also featured Witchburn as BJ Shea's Loud and Local Band of the Week on two separate occasions. Plans to record the follow up to their debut album are quickly coming together for the band to enter the studio with Jack Endino once again. Both the band and Endino are excited to work together again and the record’s completion is expected sometime in late spring or early summer, 2012.
Pouring their whole hearts into their own bluesy brand of sultry Sabbath sludge, Witchburn commands you to throw your metal horns up high!
