"Fumihito Sugawara & Claude Nine – 35mm"

Fumihito Sugawara & Claude Nine – 35mm

Not everyone wants to sit down to a Martini, but I imagine carrying around a metal briefcase full of chill would be pretty satisfying. For me Fumihito Sugawara & Claude Nine’s album, 35mm, invites you to do just that. This album is tastefully retro while avoiding pretentiousness. As you listen, it may feel like you’ve been here before, that Bossa Nova can only be re-imagined so many ways. But, as you recline into each track with a room full of friends, it feels comfortable and inviting. 35mm is a soundtrack for your evening. Allow yourself the pleasure of getting close to someone else, where casual touch in playful conversation accents the sound of ice falling into your glass. -Rocky -

"RecommNeds/Sugawara and Claude 9/Nostalgia 77"

It’s nostalgia time for the RecommNeds…starting with this wonderful album that plays like a soundtrack to a movie that doesn’t exist. It’s a movie that might feature a lounge where James Bond and Austin Powers get together to have a cocktail and meet some lovely ladies after a long day of kicking bad-guy ass. On 35mm Fumihito Sugawara teams up with Claude Nine for an album full of delicious bygone grooves: surfy guitar, bossa nova organ and plenty of fun. -

Bio

35mm is a band that is reconstructing the 50-60's lounge music genre with a sultry and polished style, influenced by bossa nova, tango, jazz, surf music, space-age pop, and spy-movie soundtracks. They have taken their love for such composers as Dick Hyman, Henry Mancini and Juan Garcia Esquivel, and produced an original album worthy of any Aston-Martin convertible (between road racer and submarine, of course) sound system.

Fumihito Sugawara and Claude 9 are building a live scene in Austin, Texas around the music of 35mm, and the response has been strong.  As an album that fits no particular genre, the title is a perfect addition to the
already eclectic Ropeadope catalog. Retro lounge style on top of modern beats, a touch of surf guitar, and some latin rhythm round out this relentlessly cool record.

Fumi and Claude have played together for many years in Austin hip hop/funk band Afrofreque, and they have maintained busy schedules as players in Austin bands such as Charanga Cakewalk, Bruce James Quintet, Supercreeps, Cilantro Boombox, Hail Marley and various others. Fumi has had three albums released on Ropeadope records prior to 35mm, one of which was a collaboration with Black Gold 360 from the Netherlands. Claude 9 has released several 12 inch House music releases from labels like Sha-boom and Dae records, as well as the popular Viva la Remix EP with DJ Manny as Los Bandidos Cosmicos. Rounding out the band are drummer Masumi Jones, winner of the 2013 Austin Chronicle Best Drummer award for her work with the Jitterbug Vipers and her Lunch with Masumi jazz and funk web series, and bassist Alan Uribe` whose credits include Charanga Cakewalk, Sub Oslo, Jackie Venson, and the Suns of Orpheus.

35mm has only been active publicly for less than a year but is currently playing regularly and looking forward to expanding the audience for their recordings and live performances, as well as a second album, in 2015.
