"Album reviews: Cage the Elephant, Arielle LaGuette, GIVERS"

Arielle LaGuette/self-released

If you’re looking to start 2016 on an easygoing note, Austin, Texas-based Arielle LaGuette’s debut EP is the way to go. A solid collection that glides from ’60s-era dreamy folk one minute to ukulele surf-rock the next, these four tracks make you feel good, even if the songs themselves aren’t always happy. “Caution by the Seaside” is a wise tale told in hindsight that will have you nodding along to the languid pop rhythm as well as the song’s content, and “Loose Ends” has a bouncy, pop sensibility that perfectly matches the whirlwind effect LaGuette’s alternately charming and maddening lover has on her. “Easing Your Heart” is the audio equivalent of a morphine feed as LaGuette’s full, deep voice dulls the pain of breaking up by pairing steady, hopeful ukulele with the lyrics, “Life can’t be happy / Without being sad.” - C-Ville Weekly

"Austin on Shuffle"

Arielle LaGuette’s ukulele-driven tunes will take your eardrums on a field trip through verdant musical meadows. Listening to these delicate compositions is like wearing rose colored glasses, but the optimism won’t fade once the music ends. These bright melodies will buzz through your brain for hours on end. Side effects may include a jaunty gait and breezy disposition. Lilting, lovely, and as luscious as Zilker Park in Spring, her debut EP will sound even sweeter inside the newly built Hotel Van Zandt on Rainey Street. Joining her classic Hollywood voice is Jordan Burchill on guitar, Alex Browne on Bass, and Anthony Corsaro on drums. - Tour Worthy

"LaGuette brings slow burn to Haileys"

LaGuette can dabble in folk, pop and Texas country if she wants to. Whatever playground she visits, she promises to exhilarate. Sounds like: Erin Austin of OK Sweetheart got a little forlorn at a luau. Or Feist decided to leave the electronics at home. - Denton Record-Chronicle

Bio

Arielle LaGuette's sound has a deceptive simplicity. Despite its breezy, dreamy lightness, her work also expresses a knowing experience of life and love. Lucinda Breeding of the Denton Record-Chronicle wrote, “Sounds like: If Erin Austin of OKSweetheart got a little forlorn at a luau or Feist decided to leave the electronics at home,”

Her talent makes her at home in a wide variety of styles, and her curiosity urges her to keep expanding her range - prompting the debut of an eclectic 4-track EP in early 2016 that Virginia's C-Ville Weekly praised, "a solid collection that glides from '60s-era dreamy folk one minute to ukulele surf-rock the next."

Before her affair with music began, LaGuette's first love was theatre. It wasn't until she attended University of North Texas in Denton that she picked up the ukulele. She quickly developed her style and skill, and frequented some of Denton's most iconic venues. Arielle later moved to Florida, where she worked and recorded with Flock of Seagulls guitarist Joe Rodriguez.

LaGuette is now 27 and based in her hometown of Austin, TX where her musical and theatrical passions thrive. When she’s not crooning on her ukulele, either solo or with her full band, you can find her on stage at The New Movement Theater performing as a main cast member of the weekly flagship improv show "The Megaphone Show."
