"Liquid: The Diamond Dream (Album Review)"

Ashon is a gifted lyricist and a vivid story teller, and those qualities combined with his very distinct voice goes into the makings of a dope emcee. For those of you who are avid hip hop heads, his voice and laid back flow is reminiscent of Royal Flush or his cousin Capone from CNN. The album is aptly named Liquid: the Diamond Dream. A tha god's production on the album is real smooth and melodic with samples from 70's and 80's ballads I have yet to see anyone use effectively. "At the End of the Day" is a song I can definitely see as a breakout single, "I'm a get my head right/ I'm a get my bread right/ I'm a do me, at the end of the day.." croons the hook. Do not confuse Diamond Dream as just another display of rap braggadocio, the album is an ode to one's struggle to achieve his or her ambitions. If anything, on this album Ashon is the most chill motivational speaker you could come across.

Another track I can see catching fire is "Strawberry". I hate to snitch but A tha god is the first one I've seen successfully chop up Brothers Johnson's "Strawberry Letter 23" with Hartford's Ru Williams executing the hook. My personal favorite would have to be the title track, "Diamond Dream". The beat is hypnotic and the bells on the track make it sound like an upbeat lullaby, definitely a track to burn to. On the track "Alive" Waxx comes through and kicks an incredible verse (" we make moves like breakdancers/ wise like a Panther with the AK strapped grillin' Samson/). Although the beats are more contemporary than boom bap, the album is far from the usual East Coast rappers and producers emulating Southern cadence and sound (no disrespect). Repping New Haven, Connecticut; Ashon and A tha God deliver a product faithful to its regional roots. For an album that was recorded all in one day, you can still see how this emcee/producer team puts time into the skill and craft. I'm sure these dudes have more in store, as well as their cohorts Waxx and Ru Williams. Keep an eye on them, but first put your ears up on this...PEACE - Al Unique - Derelict of Dialect Magazine/Blog
