Biography

You don't look to backwater hamlets like Slapout AL to find exceptional talent, until you realize that those humble environs serve as serious motivation for gifted artists like Jess Meuse, in their determination to ascend to the next level. Borne purely by her dedication to the need to perform, Jess has the drive and spirit a twenty-one-year-old needs to blast herself into orbit... she's aided by the direction and guidance of her producer Tony Buenger, who's helped her fine-tune the alt-country-rock approach she takes to her own songs, and the unique twist she applies to her favorite covers (The Ride and Simple Man). How she got the nickname" Velociraptor" is probably the first question you'll want to ask--- but once her opening set gets started, you may not have to.

Jess is fully fixated on her goal of making a career out of writing and performing music. She fronts her own band called Khamera which plays 3 to 4 shows per month. During her high school years, she performed at many school functions as well as shows for local venues, such as chambers of commerce, private parties, and town events. During that time she also played principle second violin in the Montgomery Youth Orchestra for several years.

She wrote her first song at the age of eighteen in response to a real-life situation. Since then, her writing has developed even further into more abstract and deep thought. She creates songs people can hear and say, “I know how that feels.” Every single song she has written is from her soul; typically sparked by a true story.

She has been influenced by virtually every genre of music. Her music is a blend of southern rock with alternative and rock n’ roll! Her influences include Coldplay, Miranda Lambert, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Stevie Nicks, Death Cab for Cutie, and Shinedown.

For her local shows she not only performs her original songs, she also takes cover songs to an entirely new level. She performs anything from Lady Gaga, Bruno Mars, Carrie Underwood to southern rock.

In October 2010, she was a winner at the state-wide artist showcase called Stars of Alabama Artist Showcase where she performed three of her original songs for a panel of music industry professionals from Montgomery, Atlanta, and Nashville.

In early 2011, she completed her first EP, What’s So Hard About Bein’ A Man? at Guest House Studios, LLC in Eclectic. It was released on April 9th. At first, she only wanted to record acoustic tracks of each song in an intimate acoustic setting, but soon found that several of the songs were desperately screaming out for a band to play along. So, Jess’ producer, Tony Buenger, and Jess arranged for just that. The end result was a CD of heartfelt songs with intriguing story lines.

Jess is currently working with songwriter Gary Gentry ("The Ride," "1959," "Drinkin' and Drivin'") on a set of new original songs.

Music is Jess’ heart and her soul. Her major goal is to inspire through her music.

Start Again

Written By: Jess Meuse

On top of the world is where I stand alone
Just me and my shadow and a heart of stone The people I need to get out of my life It's like tryin' to make the sun come out at night

I'm burning bridges down
Walkin' a wire starin' at the ground

In a world of black and white
Where sparks fly and stars collide
Who wouldn't pray for a second chance
Who wouldn't want to start again?
In a world where mountains crumble down
And in the water, you sink and drown
Who wouldn't pray for a second chance
Who wouldn't want to start again

Time flies by as the young man dies
Fighting a war, he didn't know why.
Planets turn to dust and pure metals rust What do we do when nothing's left but us?

I'm burnin' bridges down
Walkin' a wire starin' at the ground

In a world of black and white
Where sparks fly and stars collide
Who wouldn't pray for a second chance
Who wouldn't want to start again?
In a world where mountains crumble down
And in the water, you sink and drown
Who wouldn't pray for a second chance
Who wouldn't want to start again

What's So Hard About Bein' a Man?

Written By: Jess Meuse

Did my kiss linger just a little too long A handhold that was a little too strong Just tell me what I did to you what was so wrong So you don't become just another sad song

Was my smile too much to be brought into play Happiness too strong to be just a mistake Tell me how many hearts in the past did you take Tear, burn into ashes, and break

Tell me please 'cause I can't understand What's so hard about bein a man When you finally find somethin you take what you can What's so hard about bein a man?

did my touch feel too good on your skin
Enough to scare you and force this to end Was I really so bad as to make you lose wind So you can't even be just my really good friend

Was the way I looked at you too much
The way our hands fit whenever they touched Afraid of the unknown afraid of the rush You took what you needed for lonliness but

Tell me please 'cause I can't understand What's so hard about bein a man When you finally find somethin you take what you can What's so hard about bein a man?

And I know it was best
You could say nothin less
But the weight that I'm leavin on your chest will make you

Tell me now 'cause I can't understand
What's so hard about bein a man
When you finally find somethin you take what you can What's so hard about bein a man?

Lucid Dream

Verse
Before I sleep every night, I count the stars in the sky
I close my eyes and realize, I'm living a dream in real life
Right in front of me, You're right in front of me

Chorus
I'm living in a lucid dream, I'm wide awake, or so it seems
I never wanna wake up - rather be asleep
And find you here in my sweet lucid dreams

Verse
I see the world shine in your eyes, Shinin' full of fireflies
And I'm a fool for you so I'll just stay asleep, There's no where else I'd rather be
'Cause you're with me in my dreams, Right with me in my dreams

Choruse
I'm living in a lucid dream, I'm wide awake, or so it seems
I never wanna wake up - rather be asleep, And find you here, find you here

I'm living in a lucid dream, I'm wide awake, or so it seems
I never wanna wake up - rather be asleep, And find you here in my sweet lucid dreams

Coda
Before I sleep every night, I count the stars in the sky

Save Me

Written By: Jess Meuse

Verse
I don't do a lot of things right I say things and don't think twice
Yeah and I don't pray every single day Don't believe in religion, but I believe in faith

Chorus
So save me, save me
I've done things wrong and have regrets
There's a lot of things, if I could, I'd forget
Never look back, think of the past
Maybe somehow, someday at last
Someone'll save me, save me
Save me from myself
Save me from this hell
Save me from myself
Save me, save me

Verse
Yeah there's a lot that I get wrong
When my faith ran thin, and I wasn't strong
When I needed a friend, a friend
They pushed me out, but you took me in

Chorus
So save me, save me
Save me from myself
Save me from this hell
Save me from myself
Save me, save me
Save me, save me
Save me, save me
Save me, save me
Save me from myself
Save me from this hell
Save me from myself
Save me, save me

Imaginary Friend

Verse
You can try To tell me how it is
There's no room inside And I have no friends
An empty room Such a lonely view
But I don't mind no, no, no

Chorus
'Cause I have you My imaginary friend Yeah, yeah, yeah
It's like playin' with the wind Runnin' in circles With my imaginary friend
No one cares 'Cause they wouldn't let me in So I'll go runnin' around in circles
With my imaginary friend Yeah, yeah, oh

Verse
I still try I try more every day
But talk is really cheap And people they never stay
But you'd never lie You'd never fade away
The only one I've ever had

Chorus
Who didn't lie to my face My imaginary friend Yeah, yeah, yeah
It's like playin' with the wind Runnin' in circles With my imaginary friend
No one cares 'Cause they wouldn't let me in So I'll go runnin' around in circles
With my imaginary friend Yeah, yeah, oh
Yeah, yeah, oh

Star-crossed Dreamer

Written By: Jess Meuse

Verse
It's possible if you really try Don't tell me to wake up to real life
'Cause I was born under a purple sky Where it wasn't so uncalled for to fly
So tie my hands behind my back 'Cause I know where the secret's at
It's not so hard to let me lose my mind When I choose to leave the rest all behind

Chorus
These cold chains can hold me down That won't stop me
They might make me slowly drown That won't stop me
But I'm alright, I'm alright now Yeah, star-crossed dreamer save me now

Verse
It's like a second chance at life So easy but I messed it up both times
'Cause I'm so far away in my head Yeah, so lost in my own mind
So tie my hands behind my back And blind me so all I see is black
Let me get carried far away When I decide that I don't wanna stay

Chorus
These cold chains can hold me down That won't stop me
They might make me slowly drown That won't stop me
But I'm alright, I'm alright now Yeah, star-crossed dreamer save me now

Chorus
These cold chains can hold me down That won't stop me
They might make me slowly drown That won't stop me
But I'm alright, I'm alright now Yeah, star-crossed dreamer save me now
