Bio

This afterparty sucks," Idan remembers thinking when asked about the night he met Kristina. "I mean, what is it with afterparties anyhow? We try so hard to keep it going but the vibe just slips away."

Kristina remembers it differently: "That afterparty rocked! Everyone was having an awesome time and here was this guy sulking on the couch, obviously trying to look like he wasn't enjoying himself. Don't even ask me why I started talking to him because I have no idea."

"Whatever, I'm sitting there minding my own business," Idan continues, "when out of nowhere this girl drops down next to me like some fashion catastrophe and starts going on about what a great party this is. I tell her, 'the smiles are fake, the styles are borrowed, and the music totally sucks!' And I wish you could see how huge her sunglasses were. First of all, who wears sunglasses at 3am indoors? Second," he says, turning to Kristina, "you looked like George Michael."

Laughing, Kristina says, "Ok, you can never believe a word this guy says, and as if anyone takes your opinions about fashion seriously, but yah we did agree the music sucked. So I asked him, 'Okay rockstar, what are you gonna do about it?'"

"And that's it. We started a band."

* * *

AfterpartY was created by 20-year-old vocalist Kristina B and keyboardist Idan Erez at 3am in a downtown loft in Toronto, sometime in 2004. Both of them hated turning on the radio and hearing the same thing over and over again. Somewhere along the line, they realized, pop music became less about melody and songcraft and more about production. So the two set out to form a band dedicated to bringing something new and unforgettable to the music scene.

Made up of some of the most talented young musicians in Toronto, AfterpartY has fast become known for its exciting new sound and high energy live show. Although playing together for only one year, AfterpartY has headlined to full houses at many of Toronto’s greatest and largest venues for indie music including Lee’s Palace and the Reverb. On the strength of its strong live performances, AfterpartY was invited to appear at the Thanda fashion show in support of the Campaign to Make Poverty History, and has been featured on Roger’s Daytime Television in the show’s first-ever live music spot.

Musically, AfterpartY’s songs recall the strong songwriting of the 80s with their instantly-recognizable melodies and high energy hooks, but with a much edgier, guitar-driven sound. Owing to the band members’ diverse musical backgrounds, AfterpartY’s songs incorporate elements from many different musical styles, ranging from punk to indie and disco. Kristina takes the listener by storm, delivering vocals that can jump from playful to threatening, but always leave the audience screaming for more. On lead guitar, AfterpartY includes the multi-instrumentalist Avital Zemer; supporting him with rhythm is his younger brother, Lavi. And kicking in the heavy dance grooves are the hard-hitting Carlos Aguilera on drums and prog monster Juan Carlos Rivas on bass.

AfterpartY is currently recording its debut material with Haydain Neale (jacksoul) in the studios of Sony-BMG and Doane-LeBlanc. The band will be playing shows throughout the fall and winter in support of their forthcoming album. Check back here regularly for show-dates and the latest...
