The Thirteen Strings Guitar Duo formed in 2001 out of the University of Southern California's prestigious Thornton School of Music, where Jazz guitar students Jim Cheesman (MM'03) and Donovan Raitt (BM '05) began playing Jazz and popular standards in student performance workshops and eventually to local venues in the Los Angeles and Orange County areas.
The combination of the standard 6 string guitar combined with the expanded lower range of the 7 string guitar resulted in a very unique sound. This combination results in a sound fuller and richer than a traditional guitar/bass/drums trio, while not as limited as with a duo between two six string guitars.
The 13 Strings Guitar Duo takes pride in its versatility in many different styles of music. Unlike many musical ensembles that are limited to a particular genre of music, the 13 Strings Guitar Duo performs arrangements of recognizable songs in many genres including Jazz, Latin, R&B, Pop/Rock, Top 40 and much more. Since both guitarists are accomplished at both classical and jazz guitar, they often will include traditional classical or flamenco guitar arrangements in their sets.
The Thirteen Strings Guitar Duo is available for all events and functions, bringing live music to restaurants, private parties, weddings, receptions and any other event or venue that has a need for affordable, reliable, and professional musicians.
