I had the pleasure of witnessing the debut performance of a new band in Las Vegas, NV called 13 Years, at the Neon Venus on November 5, 2010. It was an exciting, high-energy show mixing covers with originals. Their original material draws from their grunge heroes Soundgarden and Alice in Chains, along with some elements of Tool and Disturbed. Everyone in attendance was shocked to hear that this band had only been together for a couple months. But not me. I knew this was a true local super group, and couldn’t wait to hear what they had to offer. And I wasn’t disappointed.
I was familiar with two of the guys from the local band scene: vocalist Paul Gayou had been in a band called Fraktured, and his Dio/Cornell rasp has been a local favorite for a couple years. Bassist James White had been gigging heavily around town with a band called Sevenleafgreen. As both of those bands fell apart, Gayou and White teamed up and stumbled upon guitarist Joe Wiehl from A Grand Omen. Drummer Todd Turgeon, who had been working with several bands, was the final piece of the puzzle.
A few days after the show, 13 Years posted a couple of songs online. “The Last Time” and “Enemy Within” are inspired, heavy, yet commercial hard rock anthems. Fans of Disturbed, Soundgarden, Mindfunk, and Alice in Chains will savor a new entry into the scene that I am absolutely convinced will attain national status in short order. - Wafflesatnoon.com
The band starts right off with some great strong vocals of Paul Gayou reminiscent of the Cult and could be the offspring of a menage a trois of Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and Danzig. The heavy bass brought on by James White that doesn't get drowned out like a lot of bands these days. I appreciate the attention to that detail. Todd Turgeon brings in his precision drumming that brings in some grunge influences and keeps you engaged. Of course, we can't forget the guitar of Joe Wiehl which brings in a powerful flawless play with several highlights in Enemy Within.
The vocals could be described as a familiar sound but only as a compliment since it is unique to stand on it's own and bring in a new audience.
The chorus falls into line and the buildup after does not disappoint! I suggest you take a listen and enjoy the sounds of 13 Years. I have not seen 13 YEARS live but when I hear Enemy Within, I have visions of devil horns in the air and head banging. 13 Years is an original hard rock band from Las Vegas featuring high energy live performances combining the strong melodic rasp of vocalist Paul Gayou; the skillful, heavy bass of James White; the powerful crunchy riffs and guitar solos of Joe Wiehl; with the kick ass beats and showmanship of drummer Todd Turgeon. 13 Years has many layers to their music including hard driving metal, progressive and grunge inspired songs that at times have the audience jumping, hands in the air, and at other times grooving to the music but always engaged.
13 Years has been playing shows in Las Vegas since December, 2010 including two shows at the House of Blues Las Vegas, (opening for Steel Panther), The Cheyenne Saloon, Feelgood's Rock Bar, Vamp'd Rock Bar, First Friday Arts Festival, Circus Circus Casino on the Las Vegas Strip, The Rock Room, and The Dive Bar. 13 Years currently has shows book at Diablos Cantina in the Monte Carlo Hotel/Casino and Cabo Wabo Cantina in the Planet Hollywood Hotel/Casino, both on the Las Vegas Strip and The Black Door in Las Vegas. 13 Years is currently planning and scheduling dates in California, Utah and Arizona for August/September, 2011.
